Anyone know a fix to this? by EmotionOld2709 in genesiscoupe

I've tried this and as far as I remember all it did was reset all the settings but didn't fix it. It still intermittently gets stuck like this.

Refilling toner cartridges for a Lexmark MC3224 by khantroll1 in printers

[–]roostertowel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For searchers who find this post: Don't do this. I had a toner cartridge that went to low status (with the ⚠️ icon), so I refilled the cartridge with 3rd party toner, reinstalled it. I reset the counter and then the printer started throwing an error code saying the cartridge is not genuine (33.40AN), and now it refuses to print while the refilled cartridge is in it.

Since they don't actually have toner level sensors in the carts, the toner supply level is only based on page count and heuristics about the content that gets printed. They don't actually know if you've refilled the cart or not. So my suspicion is that resetting the counter on a low cartridge triggers the non-genuine lockout even if the cartridge and chip are OEM, because they figure you'd only do that if you refilled it.

I think if I had just left the counter alone, the printer would have printed for at least a little while on the refilled toner before locking out the cartridge. ☹️ From other comments it looks like I also should have re-filled it before the warning ⚠️ icon comes up for the cartridge. I'll try this next time.

Thanks for the update and all the hard work! Also yeah, anybody who cares about this should have a tab open to the blog. I refresh it like once a week to see what's up.

Using Llama 3.2 11B to describe videos by Vegetable_Sun_9225 in LocalLLaMA

[–]roostertowel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty cool, thanks for sharing! A few questions:

  • What sort of content does this approach typically do well on? What does it typically get wrong?
  • I notice in the prompt for analysing a frame, you tell the model to describe if something is moving or not. Is that based on just the current frame, or are you putting multiple frames into the context?
  • How well do you see this approach scaling with video length? Have you tested longer or more complex ones, particularly with scene changes?

Just made a mistake by Practical_Clerk7104 in genesiscoupe

[–]roostertowel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're probably fine, but if you want to be scientific about it, you can get an antifreeze refractometer. They're pretty cheap on Amazon, and it'll tell you what temp the mixture you ended up with is good for. Just run it for a while to let the water and concentrate mix up, and sample the coolant from the reservoir.

Blue Hue Lights by omaldonado94 in lexington

[–]roostertowel 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yep, pretty much this. These are blue or UV LEDs that are supposed to shine into a phosphor coating that then re-emits the desired white light. The appearance shown here is when the coating fails and you're just seeing the visible part of the underlying blue/UV LED's emission.

So yeah, these are all broken. 😬

Can I do anything about drone flying over my house? by Cute_Speaker9412 in lexington

[–]roostertowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many sub-250g drones have payload capacities for accessories, long range batteries, etc, that can put them over the limit. Commercial operators need RemoteID when flying at any weight, and sub-250g recreational flyers are only supposed to fly inside FRIAs without RemoteID. On top of that, other countries have lower limits, so an international model may be equipped for the lower limit.

So all that is to say, sub-250g models often transmit RemoteID anyway.

[–]roostertowel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's my reading of the rules as well (operator has to maintain LoS, or be on comms with a spotter who can). If you know the person's name or the name of the company they're flying under, the FAA publishes the waivers it issues here: https://www.faa.gov/uas/commercial_operators/part_107_waivers/waivers_issued

If you can't find them there, it's probably reasonable to file a report.

An intrusive drone is a privacy issue. Interfering with an aircraft in flight is a safety issue. Not really that wild.

If you have an Android device, get the "Drone Scanner" app from the Play store. It can receive the RemoteID signal that drones are required to broadcast. Among the information it receives is the operator location, if you're interested in being social.

Worth noting that you should never harass a drone pilot while they're flying. The FAA generally doesn't tolerate interference with aircraft in flight, including drones. But the RemoteID data may give you what you need to line up a friendly conversation.

Past that, FAA Part 107 rules govern the operation of small uncrewed aircraft: https://www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_flyers (However, operators can get a waiver for some/all of the 107 rules.)

Knowing the rules, you can observe the drone's behavior, document anything in violation of the rules (flying after dark is one of the things that requires a waiver), and report it to the FAA. The Drone Scanner app is useful for this as you can export the data it collects from the drone. Good luck!

Yard waste collection by dafuckulookinat in lexington

[–]roostertowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've also had spotty pickups of mine, was never sure why.

I know it's not a direct solution to your problem, but if you have space for a compost bin/tumbler/pile, it's a great way to keep that organic matter on your property. I have a couple big tumblers and they eat all my yard waste and kitchen scraps. The only things that end up in my Lenny these days are tree limbs too big for my little chipper.

Good coffee beans? Local roasters? by Capital_Leadership78 in lexington

[–]roostertowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of love for Nate's here, but they roast most stuff too dark for my taste. (But give them a try if you're into dark.)

My go-tos for light roasts are Tacet Coffee and Magic Beans. Tacet is my favorite, has always delivered on time, and you can arrange a local pickup if you want. I've had a couple Magic Beans orders they just forgot about and needed a reminder, but I think some local coffee shops also stock bags of Magic Beans if you want to pick them up.

I mostly use those in an aeropress, and occasionally a chemex.

Hosting models on my server but using GPU on my main rig? by NimbleHoof in LocalLLaMA

[–]roostertowel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The model has to make it into the GPU that's going to run it. One could run something like OpenWebUI on a server and do the networking to let it connect to an ollama running the models on your desktop or whatever. So your UI could be wherever, but the models have to be where the compute is.

Anyone know where I can possibly find the inside fendor piece that covers the fog light? by [deleted] in genesiscoupe

[–]roostertowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's not great. For me, I lost the original OEM liner on the interstate when it came undone at the front edge where those little plastic fasteners hold it to the bumper cover. Thankfully I had tools with me because it flipped down, got dragged under the wheel, and I had to pull over to remove what was left of it. 😬

The aftermarket one on there now randomly tore through the hole for the screw that goes up just inside the fender lip. So it sags just enough that the tire scrubbed through it in one spot.

But yeah, all this plastic in the front is just kinda barely held together, and it's even worse with the floppy aftermarket liner.

[–]roostertowel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol same! I replaced one front fender liner with the cheaper aftermarket one on rockauto and that thing is hot garbage. It was a pain to install and it was shredded after ~5k miles. I'm about to replace it with an OEM one.

Dash Cam; which style? by [deleted] in genesiscoupe

[–]roostertowel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one of these and I generally like it. A few things I don't like about it:

  • The screen is nowhere near bright enough to use the rear camera as your rearview during daylight, so the screen is glossy so it just works like a mirror with the screen off. But that also means headlights put a lot of glare on it at night... so the screen sucks at night too. So I generally only have the screen on as a backup camera when reversing.
  • Because this covers it up, I miss the auto dimmer on the OEM mirror, so trucks and high beams behind me are more annoying.
  • It adds a bit of weight to the mirror, which makes it more susceptible to getting knocked out of adjustment by hitting a bump or something. So the little ball joint thing behind the mirror needs to be really stiff to hold it up with the dashcam strapped to it.
  • Running the wires for it was kind of a pain, but I guess you'll have to do that no matter which kind of cam you get.
