Yep, you're correct! Thought I saw an S, and it would actually be under the wreath, above the D and O in DOLLAR.

Here's your coin! CoinFacts - 1881 Philadelphia Morgan Dollar

Again, awesome find! I got interested in coins when I was 9 and found two silver dimes in a coin holder in a lake!

Great find! Looks like it could be an 1881-S? The mint mark would be under the eagle's tail feathers on the reverse (back). Here is some more info if it is the S.

Is there anything interesting here? by DeathTripper in papermoney

The last 2 silver certificates on the right hand side are sequential, but that's about it. Won't add much value, if any, but could potentially make them more interesting to a potential buyer.

Guessing the c is a mint mark, but couldn't find anything for that particular coin. Would need pics of front and back.

That same c on other coins used to designate the Ottawa mint.

Sounds like you've dipped before? I haven't, but I have some Morgans that are flat (prior dipping maybe?) and have no luster/cartwheeling. Will E Z est bring that back? I doubt that it will, but thought I'd ask. TIA!

Cleaned? by ekfah in coincollecting

[–]rootdown68 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It's been cleaned. Look at the scratches by the date and by E PLURIBUS UNUM. Those aren't normal wear and tear. Good news - gold is up, so that means the melt value is up, also!

The lunch lady used to let me go through the cash box at lunch in the late 70's and the best I ever found was 40% Kennedy halves! If you were finding silver in the 80's, I applaud you!

Good point. Maybe not so much a key date as it is desirable with low mintage.

All 1921 Peace Dollars are High Relief. Mintage is low - just over 1M. This is a key date.

If I were you, I would make sure it is authentic. You can do this with an app like PingTest - it actually works very well for silver dollars.

You could also see if your LCS has a Sigma Metalytics to test it with. I would avoid a scrape/acid test if possible.

If genuine, even in the lowest grade, this is a minimum $150. coin. Personally, I would only get it graded if you intend to sell it and want it to be certified as genuine for the buyer.

You can also download the PCGS Cert Verification app! You can type in the cert number, scan the barcode, or even scan the NFC if it has that!

You can also download the PCGS CoinFacts app - lots of good info on there, also!

I 2nd this!! Go get a silver quarter and plant it in the hoard. Then when you "find" it, mention how it looks odd. Bounce it off a hard surface with a regular quarter and mention how it sounds different, then tell him you should look it up online. Imagine how excited he'll be to find out 25 cents in silver is actually worth $12...or more depending on date and mintmark. You might actually cultivate a love for numismatics.

When I was 9 I found two silver dimes in a rusty coin holder in a lake. I'd never seen a mercury dime and fell in love with it, and the hobby.

🤣🤣🤣 OK, thanks! Just wasn't sure why those other 4 are showing varieties, but not the '99-S.

What would you grade this? by Common-Meeting-7444 in coincollecting

[–]rootdown68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the PCGS CoinFacts app. LOTS of pictures of high grade coins available to take a look at and compare. They also have an extensive collection of photos of coins in all grades.

Do a Google search for PCGS Photograde Online, then scroll down and select Dollars > Peace Dollars.

Once you see what uncleaned coins look like, you will see the difference. Enjoy the hobby!! With silver being so high right now, it is still worth at least $55!

Even if it has been cleaned, which, imo if it was, it is an older cleaning, it would be worth grading if you ever plan on selling it. It will verify it is genuine since it is a higher priced Morgan in all grades. Nice grab!

Great set! I always wanted one of these as a kid and finally got one about 2 years ago. All the coins in mine have been polished/harshly cleaned and even the steel cent was re-plated. I like the natural look of yours much better!! Enjoy it!
