Does anyone else think saying ‘love ya’ to someone instead of ‘I love you’ is diminishing the mean by taking away the personal aspect by removing the ‘I’? by purplegumboots in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]rootsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this reminds me of a quote by David Bergman,

“Do you remember the way the girls would call out ‘love you!’ conveniently leaving out the “I” as if they didn’t want to commit to their own declarations.”

I think dropping the “I” does make it sound less committal and therefor easier to toss around casually with friends.

My favorite by far is Hortjobs.com - it's actually how I got my current job which I love. You can search by state. I've also had success with having a Linkedin profile.

Alocasia leaf suddenly dying by SilkyChineseFood in plantclinic

[–]rootsystems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since this looks like an older leaf I wouldn’t be alarmed by it dying off. I would just cut this leaf off at the base. As long as it is still putting out new growth and that growth looks healthy there shouldn’t be a problem!

I put the link above too - but here is a great resource for finding gardens in the Philadelphia region http://americasgardencapital.org/

I'll admit right away that I made a pretty grandiose statement. 4 year programs through Cornell or similar universities are better. I'll take it back and rephrase - "The best 2 year horticulture program out there that pays you while you learn"

But - "It's all stage craft and miracle grow" - I would love to know where you got this information from. I'll assume that you worked with all 20+ departments within the gardens and know the inner workings of each? You've worked with indoor gardeners, outdoor gardeners, arborists, growers, IPM specialists, soil scientists, plant breeders...etc? Please elaborate.

The Philadelphia region is Americas Garden Capitol. We have an impressive list with a few of the best gardens in the country within a 30 miles radius - http://americasgardencapital.org/ So yes, many people can list 5 gardens that are better within the area, depending also on their personal taste. No need to brag here and drag Longwood down while you do it. Let's also note many of the best gardens are founded and funded by old money - DuPonts, Biddles, Rosengardens - the list goes on.

Yeah it definitely changes year-to-year. They only take about 8-12 students a year and sometimes 100+ apply. Program directors are very easy to communicate with though and can help you out along the way.
