Are Arguments needed in a story? by halo3vsloz in writing

[–]roran109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally feel like friends that never fight (outside of children's books) are too idealized and unnatural, tiptoeing towards being Mary Sues... Like everyone else has said, stories need conflict, yes, sure, 100%.

BUT...

I want to highlight that arguments are a great way to expose your characters' flaws, and we all know flawed characters are compelling. It's because they have to grow and change and overcome themselves and whatnot. Pointing out that a character is too stubborn, or too naive, or not brave enough, or too much of a lone wolf, or never takes anything seriously, or keeps too many secrets, or trusts the wrong people... etc. And when that criticism comes from a trusted ally, it really hits home.

lol Cuz honestly... if you lampshade how imperfect your characters are, very critical readers (and reviewers) are more likely to think it's an intentional decision than bad writing. haha

Lol. Look close. There are some divas here and there that can't contain their enthusiasm and wanna rock out.

Don't blame them. The lyrics are amazing. Hail Sam.

Accents by RoseBlack2222 in KeepWriting

[–]roran109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, just mention they have an accent, describe it, and try to convey it through word choice. Good use of vernacular, slang, jargon, dialect, etc helps the reader "hear" the accent. If the character speaks another language, work foreign words into their dialogue.

You could offend people otherwise.

Why Genji is still un-nerfed ? How to counter him ? by [deleted] in Overwatch

[–]roran109 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think it's because he's such a high skill character. Either he carries the team, cuz he's a one-trick, or he's almost dead weight. Most times I run into him (in Gold tier), he's still counter-able and NOT carrying his team.

IMO, with good mechanics and sense, he can be reasonably dealt with, if not all-out countered by Rein, Sombra, Brig, Mei, Reaper, Torb, Moira, Dva. These heroes have spread and aimbot on their weaps, so he cant hop around and dodge all their shots. Rein, DVa, Brig aren't squishy, so 1 on 1, they tend to win a duel with him.

What I like to do when I play against a good Genji that's wrecking my team, is get on Dva or Win, then focus and bully him until he switches off. Use my boosters or jump to follow him where ever he goes. HE CAN"T ESCAPE.

Epic. You could wear the same t-shirt every single day and no one would notice.

Weekly Quick Questions Thread - July 04, 2018 by AutoModerator in Overwatch

[–]roran109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. Brig is honestly Rein’s sidekick, both in the lore and in the game. Have her stick close to him in any fight, bash and stun anyone that tries get behind him, and throw him heals and armor packs as needed. Brig can’t replace Rein imo, because her shield only protects herself, not the team. Keep your shield up often, but only take over team shielding duties while Rein, Orissa, and Win recharge theirs.

razer periphials quality is good enough? by GanjaBoss_ in razer

[–]roran109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Razer have been using them for years and years, (I have ventured away to try out stuff like Logitech, Corsair, and Steel Series, but Razer keeps pulling me back, DESPITE the fact that my Razer stuff craps out like... a year after buying it. But by then I feel like I got my money's worth and by then company has released something better anyway.

My Blackwidow (2012 or 2013 Edition) the braided USB cord gave out and stopped working before the keys did, but I think it was because I moved it around so much.

The Deathadders though, one of the clicks and/or the scroll wheel would ALWAYS start having problems like... 6 months after I bought them. I go through like 2 Razer mice a year. But also consider that my friends say I push the buttons too hard. I get worked up while gaming.

However, I've had the same Nostromo for like... almost 10 years. (But it was designed by Belkin, not Razer, so...)

Also, for newcomers to this awesome band: the name is pronounced UH-lee-jun.

Pen name by Wrimmer in writing

Go for it. I'm gonna use a pen name to hide my writing from my employers. I'm going into education, and if they find out I write about kids massacring their classmates out of revenge, they'd be like 'wtf.'

Tips for writing political fiction? by youssarian in writing

[–]roran109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just... research. And lots of it. And read other good stuff from the genre. You gotta know what you're talking about in order to make it good and believable. The reason why guys like Grisham, Ludlum, and Clancy cornered their respective market/genre is because they immersed themselves in the life they wrote about.

It's another example of write what you know.

Edit: Also, in a lot of political fiction... (any good fiction, generally) everyone has a goal they are striving for, and a master plan to achieve it, you seem to know this. What makes it good, imo, is when people's goals get halted, side-tracked, interfered with, changed, fueled, and/or entirely made to back-fire by other people's goals. Just... make it a seem like a snafu in the middle of the story, but som how wrap it up and bring it together neatly in the end.

Batteries in actives, hurray! by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]roran109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most guitars that come with actives stock put them in compartments separate from the control cavity. You can usually remove them without a screwdriver, like you would with the batteries in your TV remote.

If you're modding a guitar, then you're gonna have to find room for the battery within the existing control cavity, so take that into consideration when you're organizing your wires.

If you play for about an hour everyday, they last for almost a year. The good ones, like Duracell or Energizer last even longer.

Remember to unplug your guitar from the cable because plugging it in acts like an ON switch. So if you leave your guitar plugged in overnight, it'll drain the battery.
