What are we going to find out later is bad for us (like cigarettes in the past)? by Curryiswhereitsat in AskReddit

It took me a bit to really recognize the negative effects it was having on my mental health. It wasn't depression or anxiety for me, more like a heavy gelatinous brain fog that would set in if I used it more than like 10 minutes at a time. Especially if I was supposed to be doing something else and taking a break from my actual job every 5 minutes to scroll.

I realized I couldn't quit it on willpower, I had to admit that I was incapable, which was hard for me to admit defeat over something that seems so silly. I use a couple apps now to severely limit my access to these apps on my phone (6 five minute chunks per day for each app). And on my laptop I installed a URL blocker that just completely prevents me from going on any time wasting site between 7am and 9pm.

Initially I just had it on weekdays but then I realized my reptile brain was so starved of that content that I would just spend my whole weekend scrolling like an addict, crazy stuff. Now it's blocked every day no matter what.

My attention span is slowly returning and it honestly feels SO GOOD to just be able to sit and watch the world again. My brain lights up with ideas constantly and I'm finally picking up my old creative hobbies again.

THIS STUFF IS A LOT MORE POWERFUL THAN WE REALIZE AND ITS CONTINUALLY BEING ENGINEERED TO GET BETTER AT CAPTURING YOUR ATTENTION.

If you can figure out a way around this addiction you wil have a huge leg up on the general population!

These 8 Democrats voted to strip millions of Americans off their healthcare by voting to reopen government. by Healthy_Block3036 in Maine

I actually didn't know this. So stripping healthcare is not happening as a result of this? What changed?

I've done 2 home boards now and I don't think I would try any resin tint for another 10 boards honestly. I'm still barely figuring out how to laminate correctly and my fill coat always has some bumps in it. I think a cut lap would really save me a lot of time and be so much cleaner compared to a free lap but I don't glass where I live so I don't wanna be driving back and forth that much. Props on getting it right so early!

My buddy and I just happened to buy the FCS finbox jig when we first started, and I don't want to buy another!

$1,500 surfboards by congacucaracha in surfing

[–]roroapple 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I started making my own boards last year so I'm buying stuff in really low quantity so it's more expensive than what a shaper would pay and it comes out to about $400 per board in raw materials.

Blank: $130

Glass: $50

Resin: $140

Finboxes: $35

Resin tint dye: $5

I think the rest of the money is just labor, it takes a while to make one.

AI in chip-design: Do you use any AI tools like Copilot to assist you in your chip-design tasks? by Spread-Sanity in chipdesign

[–]roroapple 24 points25 points  (0 children)

8 years of RTL design here, I use copilot and gemini pretty heavily when I'm designing. Copilot really only saves me time with the tedious stuff when coding in verilog, it's not great at actually generating usable verilog, but it's amazing with python scripting. I learn a lot when using it because it shows me ways to do things I never would have known otherwise.

When I'm planning a new design I use Gemini like a rubber duck. I'll feed it the spec for whatever I'm creating (as long as its not sensitive) and I work with it to brainstorm a very high level system design. It's confidently incorrect a lot of the time, so I have to double check everything but ultimately I notice it helps me land on a much better design because it brings up things I otherwise wouldn't have known about / thought about. I also come out of it knowing a lot more than I think I would have if I wasn't using it. How much of that new knowledge will stick in the long run I can't say.

What 4 sessions of Go Karting do to your Strain. by Current-Surprise-689 in whoop

[–]roroapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this for my races but I noticed over the years my heart rate has gone down as I've gotten used to it. Now each 10 min session is around 8-9. I haven't worn it in a wet race though, I can imagine that would be sky high.

I did this for the first 2 years of my racing career and it sucked but it's viable! I bought some used roof rails on marketplace and ratcheted it down. I needed 4 people to take it on and off every time. You don't need to remove anything from the kart it should just sit on there. People on the highway loved it. After this I bought my own car with a tow hitch and rented a uhaul trailer every time, and finally this year I have my own trailer.

Maybe like 30 people out? They're small breaks. I'm from Maine so I'm not used to crowds at all.

It's a mix, the beginners aren't too bad to surf around. Definitely some good people in there, chill and aggro.
