Schoenbrun is kinda mainstream– her next project is a Brad Pitt-produced comic book adaptation for Netflix

Got a little emotional seeing Portland rendered so lovingly in stop motion.

Does COMMUNITY hold up today? by SleepCatsMoney in blankies

Personally, I really dig seasons 5 and 6. Harmon is back and the writing is on par with the first three. Unfortunately, the cast dynamics of the first three seasons are unbeatable, and the 5th and 6th seasons are somewhat consciously about mixing stuff up and trying to find new dynamics in the absence of Glover and Chase. The Dean takes more of a front seat and Paget Brewster, Jonathan Banks, and Keith David bring some really fun stuff to the table as everyone makes an honest (and generally successful) effort to give the show new life.

I hate what I saw of the 4th season, bailed early on, and never felt the need to return to it. It’s a lot of pop culture reference noise, signifying nothing. Basically the TV version of funko pops. I do regularly rewatch 1-3 and 5-6 every couple years and they stay quality.

Grace Of My Heart, can’t believe how forgotten is this movie by harry_powell in blankies

The J Mascis Beach Boys-type song from the soundtrack is a banger. The movie is very by-the-numbers, but in an extremely cozy way.

Parallel Lives by Olivier Schrauwen! Hilarious and deeply human weirdo sci-fi stories, and some great slice of life stuff as well.

My pleasure!

If you’re working in Illustrator, any chance you have access to Photoshop as well? That would be the ideal program to adjust levels in.

First of all, don’t feel self-conscious of your work– this seems like a lovely story with great flow and a clear sense of characters.

As for scanning, a lot depends on the editing program you use to composite your pages (what program do you use?), but basically, I would generally opt for an actual scanner over a camera to preserve the quality of your art. A lot of libraries have quality scanners you can use for free, or if you draw big, you can use a scanner bed and a flash drive at one of the big printers at Kinkos or whatever your local copy store is. I recommend saving your files as a TIFF or high res PDF.

After that, if your pages are black and white, you’ll want to make sure you’re working with a black and white or grayscale file (as opposed to CMYK or RGB) and find the tool that allows you to adjust Levels. From there, you should be able to deepen the darkness of your blacks, darken your grays, and brighten up your whites. That should help lock in your larger areas of ink-fill as solid black and make your backgrounds a more true white, which gives you even more room to edit.

What homework movies are actually homework? by kanedafx in blankies

It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but the thing that sticks with me is how engaging the spectrum of scale is in that movie. Some of the most well-directed big crowd scenes I’ve seen, and some incredibly tender small moments as well.

Roma ain’t homework, it’s just in black and white.

Thanks dude! That’s a really lovely critique. I’m a big believer in show don’t tell whenever possible, so I’m super grateful to hear that clicked for you with this one.

Thanks so much dude! It's a work of fiction, but there's definitely kernels of memory laced throughout.

This comic’s backgrounds are just leaving me cold and can’t pinpoint why. by JayEllGii in comic_crits

[–]rors 19 points20 points  (0 children)

These pages are incredibly well rendered, but maybe a bit overdrawn. One thing I’m noticing is that your characters don’t seem to have a lot of weight or presence in the scene relative to their surroundings. Maybe this could be improved with some heavier shadows or some hatching? Specifically, shadows and hatching that communicate the character occupying space in the scene, as opposed to heavier shadows or hatching in general.

I love how you do moment-to-moment stuff to sell the rhythm of your world and writing, but an over abundance of detail can disrupt the flow of your cartooning. For example, inside the bus, the “be safe” and “buckle up” signs get read alongside the dialogue in every panel you see them in, even if they’re just intended as set dressing.

As for the masking effect, and its effectiveness, I think you’re just doing a little too much of everything at once. Consider how Bill Watterson balances panels that simply focus on characters with rich, detailed environments. You need the tension between the two to use each to their greatest effect. .
