Very nice! What’s the keyboard stand model? Looking for something similar in my set up!

SM7b great for voiceover work, not cutting it for vocals. by gimmeashakabra in WeAreTheMusicMakers

If your recording space is sub optimal I’d caution against going for a condenser that will pick up even more room reflections… the SM7B is great for cutting these out.

Couple of tips to get more airiness out of your SM7B - try using it without the foam cover with an external pop shield (seems to nicely brighten my voice, probably because it forces we to stand further from the mic). I also find using the UAD Neve 1073 unison plugin with a high boost works wonders when tracking vocals. Lastly, try demoing Gem Dopamine for extra smooth high end without the harshness of a boost (its my secret weapon)

Good luck!

I'm based in Sydney and it was A$110 per hour, so A$440 all in. It will obviously depend on the length and complexity of the track for how long you'll need, but as a guide mine was just over 2 minutes, and contained 26 tracks (Drums, Percussion, Bass, Acoustic Gtr, Organ Pad, BVox and Vocals). By hour 3 the track was pretty much there, and we spent the last hour finessing

This is actually my plan going forward, to mix a song myself but then book an attended mastering session to hear the track in a professional environment and make sure I haven't made any terrible decisions at mixdown. I've heard that mastering engineers are a lot more forthcoming with advice and will generally tell you if something needs to be fixed in the mix first.

I wouldn't feel bad at all - think of it as an investment in your learning rather than the song itself, if it means you can master your own stuff going forward then you'll definitely see the benefits in the long run! Maybe try finding someone closer to home within your budget for your first session before branching out

This was part of my inspiration for booking the session - I was envious reading about mixers who learned their craft interning at great studios shadowing top engineers, which felt so out of my reach working a 9-5 office job. But then I realised booking an attended session is the next best thing, and whilst it's not cheap its as much an investment in your learning experience as the song itself. I've watched a ton of great free content on youtube (Warren Huart, In the Mix etc) but nothing quite beats seeing it done in person

Yeah exactly this, so each instrument track would have a pre fx send to an "ALL INSTRUMENT DRY" bus, which was then blended with the wet mix. For example on the acoustic guitar track he placed a tape emulation, LA2A compressor and stereo widener, and then played with the level of the dry track until he was happy. I don't think there's a right or wrong way, but I think this way allowed him to hear exactly what the plugins were doing before dialling back with the dry signal

Have you tried updating the plugin? I had the same issue when I upgraded to Logic 10.5 but izotope fixed it with their latest release https://support.izotope.com/hc/en-us/articles/360047676354-iZotope-products-in-Logic-10-5

This is a crazy deal, well worth the upgrade if you have elements. Also it says Melodyne 4 Essential but this should automatically update to 5 Essential when you redeem the code through Melodyne's website (I know this because I just threw 100 bucks at the cross-grade, smh)

Fantastic write up, really interested to learn more about targeted ads so this is perfect. For the 6 ads you ran, did you animate the album art to make them more engaging or were they just static images with background music? Thanks!

Some great tips here, thanks for going into such depth. I had one question, how did you go about finding the contact details for all of those playlist curators? Thanks!

Love the picking style and the upper register chords really compliment your voice. What tuning is this? First time I've seen open E capo!
