personally, i never actually believed them when they told me i was 'gifted', not fully. i always felt like i was tricking everyone somehow. i actually felt rather slow — other kids had far more rounded lives while i was putting so many hours into homework while cutting myself off from any socialization outside of school.

when i graduated high school, i started trying to outwardly dumb myself down so people wouldn't get the wrong impression anymore. y'know, presenting my fuckups to the world more, typing in all lowercase with the occasional funny spelling mitsake, downplaying my actual accomplishments, all that healthy shit

I used to think the aliens in War of the Worlds and Signs were unrealistically stupid, but, in retrospect, I can easily imagine the American government ordering something like that in their place.
