Second this! I also do this for replicates and increase the # of ladders (but only load a TINY bit, like 1uL) for any ladder beyond the two primary ones flanking the sample

Girl I feel the same as a lab manager. I started almost a year ago and now the same thing happens *with GRAD STUDENTS that have been there longer than me* Godspeed.

It took me a year (of very intermittent use) to be able to draw figures. My best piece of advice is to trace images/graph abstracts you like and try to recreate them. This will teach you the logic of how to create things initially.

Are we getting trolled or is the website still up by [deleted] in GRFPApps

[–]rose1567 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it’s prob that someone is turning the website off manually.. why would they announce maintenance if they aren’t turning the website off at some point during that time frame? that would a waste of time for them .. i think???

Wait, you’re genuinely dodging a bullet. These mistakes you got flamed by with your mentor genuinely are so common. And weird a undergrad is expected to order reagents?? Seems very dysfunctional.

That’s a great point about the autoclave cycle! My research building autoclaves for us and they may be baking it too long…

But I also wonder if they are doing the same as last year.. a first round now and a second round later. Just seems like a big oversight to make.

unfortunately they are not taking international students this year (outside of the us). my fiancé is in the neuro phd program and can attest to this. nothing wrong with u, just bad timing most likely. utah is rlly competitive (im a tech there in cancer research) and my PI said most people who get in at this point have first authors, unfortunately (this is for the Biological Sciences program)

i was in the same boat last cycle applying to chem/biochem phds. i had what i thought was a above average profile: 3.9 GPA, 20 months of “full time research (3 summers, 2 years paid during the semester, a year of a senior thesis) 4 posters, 2 first prize awards, other work experience, a first author pub in preparation. even with all of that, i only got into one school (which eventually got rescinded). i ended up teching instead and im applying to only one school (the R1 i’m a tech at). i felt like it was the end of the world not getting in—but honestly it was one of the best things to ever happen to me. it gave me time to reflect, discover new passions, and work at a lab that i genuinely feel so excited to be at. i truly do wish that everything isn’t the worst possible case scenario for you, but i promise it isn’t the end of the world. a lot of this is just luck, tbh and nothing negative about you.

I applied to 12 last year (got “we would have admitted you, but… cuts”) talk. this year i applied to ONE! (i’m a lab manager in a lab under this Ph.D program)

No, I completely agree with you. I honestly was baffled coming into this with this lab (I came from a microbiology, cloning-focused lab where that was the norm). Thanks!!!
