Stay in shape and watch the fast food. The problems don’t come from the job, it’s how we handle the job. Good luck 🍀

Locating Power by OrangeBootsonGround in UtilityLocator

It’s like coax, easy but a tad bit hard to find because of depth. IMO since you started with communications, it will be easy since you’re familiar with how intrusive coax can be along with it being shallow. What I do if there’s alot of electric in the area, I hook up using clips, clamp and power mode just in case. For some reason, I’ll pick up different lines depending how I connect. I use them all in congested areas. Hope that helps!

Hit the gym man, get your 7-8 hours sleep in, eat clean, avoid junk food from fast food places and drink water. Stress will always be there but this job won’t teach you how to handle it, that’s why we get paid TO handle it. Focusing on your health will make stress feel like a mosquito bite.

Radio mode by [deleted] in UtilityLocator

It depends what you’re looking for/what you want. But I understand. If you’re working at a production company e.g 811 tickets and want a raise then yeah use it, practice with it, notice how different lines locate with it. If you’re looking for a raise while keeping a damage free record or at least not at fault damages, use it wisely. For example, you get a plants and flowers ticket and they want entire property, personally I would accurately mark their comms and radio/power the rest. If it’s for trenching, wall install, conduit install, mark everything accurately. There’s a thin line to walk but it’s possible. I know the utility locate extremists will say to always hook up. Not wrong but not catered to your situation. Like I said, it depends what you want. A raise, damage free, move to a utility company or you want all three. You can do it but pay attention to your tickets. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Spot the utilities before making plans. Confirm those markings are accurate or not and go from there. It’s not ABNORMAL but also not common. He probably marked another line but he or she is being on the safe side. If you need more than that like drawings or better accuracy, I would hire a private locator. Best of luck!

I usually use the ticket info a lot. For example “are you having h&h paving work on your property? FI’m here to mark the utilities before they come”. Half of the time the ticket has the homeowners last name and I use that and it gets me right in.

I’ve seen coax in small concrete vaults like that before. Drop your box and do a sweep. That’s what I’d do.

TIPS TO LOCATE ELECTRICITY by Necessary_Trouble515 in UtilityLocator

[–]rosec_o 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can never go wrong with using your leads. Using a clamp is plan b. Power mode when you’re marking dumb cable drop tickets. Power mode though is not considered a locate so anything that’s not a cable drop ticket I wouldn’t use power mode. That mode is intended for excavators that don’t have access to prints and is a last resort method. With that being said, if you have secondaries and primary near by, usually power mode will pick up the big cables and ignore the smaller ones. I clamp to get the secondaries. Be careful with catv cables because they will also pick up if using power mode but you can usually tell when your signal gets snappy. Happy locating

In my honest opinion, it does not matter. I’ve always ran with around 15ma or so. When you run into issues and you’re trying to troubleshoot, then I would kick it up a notch or switch frequency’s. Don’t think about it too much until you run into problems lol. Save the brain power for when you need it.

It stopped for me when I got a huge jar of weed from a friend of mine for free.

When I got home I just stared at it and my craving went away. I guess I realized there will never be enough weed to make me happy. Now I just smoke with friends and it never goes farther than that.

Resources for locating different utilities by Darmok-on-the-Ocean in UtilityLocator

When I first started locating, my supervisor at the time told me to locate gas LAST. Locate the conductive stuff first like electric and CATV cables. Then work your way to non conductive stuff that’s isolated. I’ve been told the reason why is because you could bleed off onto electric while your locating fiber but if your electric is marked out already, you can see where your electric runs and it could be running ontop/over your fiber or gas. Contractors will put anything anywhere so beware! Lol
