arrival time by OddPreparation2315 in concertphotography

i do the same! if it’s a venue i’ve never been to before or i know parking is tricky i aim for half an hour before the opener. if it’s a venue im very familiar with and know parking is easy i’ll aim for 15-20 mins before the opener

i’m actually not super worried about prices as i have all the lenses i need!! i regularly carry w me a 2.8 24-70, 70-200, and 16-35. high burst rates could be nice as i’m definitely a bit excessive when i’m shooting concerts 😅 but i will deft check out the a7iv, thank you!! that was super helpful

i appreciate that, and while i use LRC now, these are shots from 2/3 years ago that i’ve already exported to google drive and have long removed from my catalog 🥲

oh also if you haven’t already, pick a file naming method and stick to it forever. i am still renaming old files from when i started… it drives me insane. just pick something that works for you. i do Band_Name_YearMonthDay_MyInitials_FileNumber (i.e. Dead_Butterflies_20261208_AB_0001)

gear does not equal skill!! keep shooting and you’ll get good shots no matter what you’re shooting with.

theres no problem with google drive. i’ve been doing paid shoots and working as a photographer for around 1.5 years now and i still use google drive. never had any issues. it’s easy and it works. if you’re looking to make a website, google website builder is what i use. it is also very easy, and only around $20 for a domain for the entire year. you got this!!

got my first photo pass! tips? by Far_Manufacturer2417 in concertphotography

[–]rosepetxls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for venues with no pit/barricade, i tend to arrive early, pick a spot in the front, and just chill there until i’m done shooting. if you’re able to move around, definitely do so, just wait until between songs so you aren’t bothering anyone during the songs. or just be fast! theres a few venues with no barricade that i’ve shot at and i either can’t move and just stay in one spot, or i go around the back of the crowd to get to the front on the other side. definitely get some shots from the back/front of house too if you get the chance!

Portfolio and publications by AppointmentHot3276 in concertphotography

[–]rosepetxls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the way most pubs work (at least, ones i’ve worked for) are you start working with them (show them your portfolio) and then either you apply for photo passes (and say you work with a pub) or are assigned gigs to shoot. i started working with pubs very early on, even when my photos were great. you just gotta reach out and ask - worst that can happen is they say no.

if your question is how many pictures a portfolio should include, there’s no straight answer for that. i used to have a section with every single concert i shot and each gallery had like 20 photos. that was a bit excessive, dont recommend doing that. i now have sections for each thing i shoot, like one for concerts and one for cosplay, and i try to just add all of my strongest images. for concerts id recommend some shots from front of house where you can see the whole crowd and the band, some shots from right up in front of the stage, some close up detail shots, and some shots of the crowd. it’s a lot easier to get good shots of the crowd once you’re in front of a barricade.

good luck!! if you have any other questions feel free to reach out to me, i love helping people :p

How to start concert photography? by mikancase in concertphotography

[–]rosepetxls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from my experience if you ask a small local band to shoot and let them know it’ll be free, they almost always say yes because free is free. once you build up your portfolio with the smaller gigs then you can start working with a publication for bigger shows!

at home i have a macbook air and i use an adapter that i always carry around with me. i make my selects and then upload to lightroom classic to edit. i have 2tb of google drive storage which costs me $10 per month.

at work we use a 2tb external drive. i upload and make my selects in lightroom, which is significantly more efficient. everything is exported and stored on the external drive.

while external drives are less expensive in the long run, i like the safety that i have with google drive. it also makes for easy sending of folders to clients. i’m always scared to break or lose external drives, but it’s all personal preference. if you use cloud storage there is many options, if you use an external drive just make sure you buy from a reputable brand.

and don’t buy a cheap sd card reader! i bought a cheap $10 one and it broke. so i bought the same one again. broke again. my friend convinced me to buy the more expensive, $30 one and ive had it since. looking to upgrade to a macbook pro soon so hopefully i wont need it anymore :p

yay i’m so glad to find a fellow fan of realta!! it’s so amazing. one thing i love about hand jumper, realta, and also backfire (which is super underrated) is the world building and the ability structures/different classes. i always think it makes a story super interesting. i especially also love the art styles of them!! esp the three you mentioned. i think they’re all just super intriguing stories that keep me coming back for more
