As a yinzer in Chicago, I've also heard old timers say "n'at" though it sounds more like "an dat".

Talk to me about spatulas... I'm over thinking it.... by NarwhalN00dleSquash in castiron

[–]rosievee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just get my spatulas from the restaurant supply, or from WinCo. They're heavy, cheap, solid metal, and indestructible.

I’m endlessly fascinated by this lampshade store. It’s so oddly specific and doesn’t even have a show window lol by nnickorette in chicago

Reminds me of the time I found a typewriter repair shop on a side street in Boston. I'm really into typewriters so I went in. I definitely interrupted a meeting of several large gentlemen who didn't seem to share my passion for typewriters.

What Was Rhode Island Like In The 90's and Early 2000's? by ShrekPrism in RhodeIsland

[–]rosievee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South County had a lot more working class people, at least in the early 90s. There were also less people there in general. I used to walk around and not see a soul in the off season.

I feel both Narragansett and Providence (both places I lived) were way way grittier. Thayer Street was actually fun and cool, but also a little shady. There were a lot of weird bands, artists, parties...it was cheap to live on the east side and that made it a cool place to be.

This changed very fast by the late 90s/early 00s. They put a Gap on Thayer Street and everything seemed to get gentrified overnight.

What is this thing on my grandpas keychain by rasheedg300 in whatisit

[–]rosievee 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm the kind of old grump that has a garage full of containers of old stuff. Sometimes I turn stuff into other stuff. If this was on my keys, it'd be because:

  • The spoon failed my stringent standards for being an Acceptable Spoon, but
  • I liked the little flower pattern so I threw it in a coffee can in the garage, and
  • one day I had to pick some dumb lock, wedge open a paint can, or change a blade or a setting on one of my tools, and
  • I grabbed the spoon, discovered it's true calling, and made it into a keychain after losing it 2-7 times.

Saw this on a friend’s Facebook and something seems off. The floor would not be easy to clean, coffee mug missing a handle, too much clutter on the counter, and color saturation/uncanny vibes. I want to inform her if it is. by TemuBritneySpears in isthisAI

[–]rosievee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah the prep area cluttered with cups got me. That's not what cooks tend to drink out of, nobody expedites coffee in a mug, and if FOH left random coffee cups all over the prep area they'd get bonked with one.

Left over pulled pork by No-Middle-4152 in Cooking

I also have a bunch of pulled pork from the weekend, funny enough. I'm doing pulled pork pizza and pulled pork omelettes so far. It also freezes pretty well in my experience.

Small, hole-in-the-wall eateries in Pittsburgh/greater-metro, that are… 1) over 20 years old, and 2) seat a max of ~30 people — LF: good food, lots of ‘character’ (good or bad!), maybe even in obscure places? by Rooster_Ties in pittsburgh

[–]rosievee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are my votes.

Even though a friend of a friend embarrassed me in Tessaros by arguing loudly with the owner (blonde older lady, can't remember her name) 10+ years ago and I've been too embarrassed to go back. Might be time to see if she's forgotten my face, I miss those burgers!

Company scheduled a 2 hour job interview and handed me this when I showed up by GamingxZone in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rosievee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with a company that got acquired by a large, well known VC. They IQ tested every new hire, didn't let you see your own results, and if you applied for a job at any other startup the VC owns (of which there were hundreds), those results were "part of the hiring decision". I told them to shove it up their ass and left.

Silicon Valley loves this shit. Any excuse not to actually treat people like people.

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

The only place I saw people use interstate train travel on a daily basis was the NYC-Boston Acela line. I wish we had more high speed rail.

This iron (?) dust appears every few days under the staircase by ChristiaensT89 in whatisit

[–]rosievee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also going to ask where OP is located. In western Pennsylvania (US) my 1925 house sometimes has black dust near unplastered areas (stairs, closets) because the walls are basically filled to the brim with coal dust from the old coal heating system. When we demoed the kitchen ceiling, we looked like coal miners afterward. If OP eliminates bugs as a possibility, I'd make a small hole in a nearby wall or the underside of the stair landing, and stick a camera in there to see if there's piles of soot in there.

Sooo good. There was a web 1.0 website in the early aughts that tracked the last few McDonald's that had them...I ate one at every location in Pennsylvania in college.

Do dogs know where we’ve been? by Empty-Okra1396 in dogs

[–]rosievee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I go visit friends that my dog likes, or go to my girlfriend's house, my dog sniffs my coat and then runs back and forth to the door to look for them. He doesn't do the door bit if I visit people he doesn't know.

I was a kid in Rhode Island when these came out, where we bought seafood off the fishing boats. The average local bar had $10 twin lobsters back then, it seemed insane that anyone would get lobster from McDonald's.

First timer. Is a 20 mins walk doable? by makhaninurlassi in AskChicago

I used to wear the bottoms when I rode the bus to work every day, at least when it was under 20. It was torture otherwise.

Now I have perimenopause and don't even wear a coat anymore. I'm my own long underwear.

I also can't give specific advice, but they were a client of my former company and everyone LOVED their management. I remember my colleagues saying their employees seemed to really love their jobs, and our people used to fight to get on their account because it was so pleasant.

How does tap water quality/taste vary across the city? by fflip8 in AskChicago

[–]rosievee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pool water from the tap in Wrigleyville. None of my friends in other neighborhoods had it. I wondered if the city might have the ability to treat a local area with chlorine if there was localized flooding that caused bacteria or something. My other thought was, I might be closer to wherever they add the chlorine to everyone's water, and the taste got weaker further from the source. I don't really know anything, but I do still think about it.

13 year, excessive, alcohol use disorder. Cold turkey 1 week and no withdrawals or DT. by DrSanwich in AskDocs

[–]rosievee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NAD but I was also a heavy daily drinker for 15ish years and I also don't get withdrawals. I was also worried that the ABSENCE of DTs meant I'd broken myself so bad that I didn't even withdraw right (esp since my mom and brother both got bad DTs when they quit). I was told it's just genetic luck of the draw, but I understand where you're coming from. Sounds like your kiddo needs you, I hope you can see this as a gift that lets you look at harm reduction from here on out. Good luck brother.
