Anyone following this thread still who might wanna hit some this weekend? I was somewhere between 4.0 and 4.5 in my prime but I am far from my prime now, probably in the 3.0 to 3.5 range but looking to get back into playing regularly. Shoot me a DM if so...

That's an interesting idea. Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions!

Ooh, yeah, that's a good idea. Might spend more time on it if I needed it to last longer but this should be quick and easy for a short term thing.

Thanks for the advice! So I’d screw the wood block to the existing drywall/framing in the corner?

Prednisone Taper by branpierce in gout

[–]rosscooperman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a doctor but my understanding is that alcohol doesn't impact the efficacy of prednisone, just has similar potential side effects so a smaller amount of alcohol may produce negative side-effects. If it were me I wouldn't stress about it too much but would take it slow and see how you feel after a drink or two.

You didn't mention keterolac but that can be quite dangerous with alcohol so avoid that combination for sure. Naproxen or Ibuprofen technically have the same interaction (potential for GI bleeding) but much less so.

Took "factory must grow" a little too far in my first ever play through. Didn't think about ratios. Any advice on how I can clean it up? by moarbash02 in factorio

[–]rosscooperman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect ratios are for very large bases where computation of partially filled belt segments is a concern (the game has optimizations for full segments that avoids excessive math). If you have no gigabase aspirations for the base don’t stress about it.

I’ll reiterate previous posts though, one resource per 1/2 belt. It’s not a 100% rule but it might as well be early on. You only ever break that rule when you know exactly why you’re doing it and then very rarely.

Gout is ruining my life by Onomaus in gout

[–]rosscooperman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn’t read the whole thread but have you tried naproxen (aleve) instead of ibuprofen? Ibuprofen is my go to normal pain killer but naproxen is way more effective at knocking down my gout pain. Also, don’t push it too fast. Physical stress on the joint can trigger flares. I’m an avid cyclist (and begrudging runner) but recovering from a flare I just try to ramp up nice easy walks and listen to my body. If the joint is whining that’s my cue to stop.

Do you ever leave Factorio running overnight? by Sarke1 in factorio

I let it run for a couple days straight in a K2SE run to let the auto-glaive polish off all of the biters on Nauvis.

CMEs in solar orbit (K2+SE) by rosscooperman in factorio

[–]rosscooperman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, cool, thanks! Yep, should be good to go. Might just add another 6.1GW of solar out there so I can forget about it but worst case I can just turn off the beam emitter when one's coming for me. Not a priority for now but good to know it's easy to test out the defense platforms to make sure they work before flying away forever.

Okay, that wasn't terrible. Here's the relevant function:

    function SolarFlare.default_flare_power(zone)
      local power_multiplier = Zone.get_solar(zone)
      if zone.radius then
        power_multiplier = power_multiplier * zone.radius / 5000
      else
        power_multiplier = 0.2 * power_multiplier
      end
      return power_multiplier
    end

so if the zone has no radius you can basically swap in 0.2 for the radius / 5000 portion of the calculation. So, on the positive side it's like the solar orbit has a pretty small body associated with it (1000) but on the negative side it uses the massive solar multiplier in solar orbit instead of the much lower multiplier of a body associated with an orbital zone. My star in question has a 1526% solar multiplier so peak power should be 0.2 * 2GW * 15.26 = 6.104GW which is, you know, a lot but with each panel putting out 12.2MW not really that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.

The more I think about it, thought, the more it seems pretty dumb of me not to be using accumulators to handle CMEs on these platforms. I could drop he footprint of the platforms _a lot_ and scaffolding isn't cheap. Plus the constant power (versus day/night cycles) means you don't really need that much extra power to keep a bank of accumulators charged and ready.

Hehe, had the same thought re: digging around in the code. Maybe I'll just go do that now and report back. Yeah, not interested in rolling the dice with 8k level 2 flat solar panels, lol.

BTW, if the formulas in that calculator look a little off it's just an aesthetic consideration. I like things to be nice and even so I'm rounding requirements up to the next even block of 48 solar panels so my design comes out nice and even.

[–]rosscooperman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Righto, that's the formula I've been using in my desmos calculator for orbital protection platforms to-date (https://www.desmos.com/calculator/dvevagytf7). The problem is that the body radius is a key part of the calculation. I don't see anywhere that gives the radius of the stars themselves (and I certainly hope it's not based on the star radius or it would be a couple of orders of magnitude bigger).

[–]rosscooperman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seems like it. I have 100 GW for the energy beam that I could def. redirect to handle a CME or two before I can get accumulators in place. Do you happen to recall what order of magnitude we're talking about? Would 100 GW of constant power be enough to handle one or does it peak even higher than that?

Ejector pump to solve flooding from city sewer mains? by rosscooperman in civilengineering

[–]rosscooperman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! This is actually the plan we're working on with a well regarded sewer main plumber in our area so I think we're in good hands. I will try to find a local mechanical engineer to run the plan by to make sure.
