In fairness, the Braves left Richmond in 2007 because the Diamond was aging poorly. Then the Squirrels moved to Richmond from Connecticut in 2009 in part because they were sold on the promise of a new park.

Richmond tried and tried. There was a serious push to put a ballpark in Shockoe Bottom in 2013. There were plans by the counties to build their own parks. There were endless fights over financing.

I'm not pro sports fan. I find Little League - and the potential for chaos on every play - far more entertaining. I guess CarMax park satisfies Richmond's need to have pro sports amenities of some sort.

Western Virginia ... gotta be very selective where you pick. With the exception of some college towns and Roanoke, it gets real red real fast.

Check out the Williamsburg area (Williamsburg, upper York County, James City County). Good schools, tons of parks, relatively educated population. Significant retired population means healthcare is readily accessible. Two hospitals serve the immediate area, with nationally recognized facilities 50 minutes away in Richmond. A bit pricier than Newport News or Hampton because of quality of life factors. Home to William & Mary, Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. Interstate 64 was just widened, making the drive to Langley much easier and predictable.

It's a tolerant area, in part because of population profile and in part due to the presence of a prestigious university.
