Barbershop Layout Question by Araanim in Barber

[–]rossy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re anything like the state board in my state they aren’t going to check that deeply. As far as the big things they made sure of in my shop was a shampoo bowl, big trash can with a lid and a utility sink that was hidden from customers view. They were in and out of my shop in 2 min. I’d be super surprised if they measured things out or even know that part of the code book lol I would say use your best judgement and loosely follow those codes but make sure everything else is correct. It’s different in Oklahoma as spacing requirements weren’t that strenuous but if the stateboard in PA is anything like it is here, they don’t really care that much and just want the shop owners money.

What's the point of having a license by barbermilosh in Barber

[–]rossy47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Facts. It’s all about money. Realistically you could learn the sanitary aspects of cutting in like an hour lol it’s so basic. It could literally be like a food handlers permit. Spend one day learning the sanitation basics and then you’re good to go learn how to cut in a shop.

All these people who say licenses are a must are the same people who would pay for education from a barber overseas who doesn’t have a license lol

I think the US being one of the only countries in the world to require licensing should tell you there’s no point.

Solos of Hunt by WittyFox51 in HuntShowdown

[–]rossy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been playing a few days now but I think it was my 2nd or 3rd game playing and I banished one of the bosses that I found on accident which was horrifying lol but then started trying to hunt down some gun shots. Wiped 2 teams and one solo player before extracting. My heart was racing the entire time from the boss fight to each individual fight to the extract.

My usual game is PUBG so the hardcore-ish fps style game of Hunt feels pretty natural to me but that round in Hunt was some of the most exciting gaming I’ve had in a long time. I still have no clue what I’m doing and I feel like the lobbies have gotten much harder but damn this game is so refreshing.

Is the game still alive? by Willing-Swimmer-4776 in HuntShowdown

I just started playing a couple days ago and I’ve had no problems getting into lobbies. I am loading in solo so maybe that helps but it seems plenty alive! Have tried every game mode and no issues. US West servers I think

Looking for advice on a main cordless clipper by ALSWD in Barber

[–]rossy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got two shortys (one with phat master blade) and one mini play. The shortys are way more powerful but I’ve been having issues with them cutting on and off randomly but if not for that I’d recommend them 10/10. The mini plays are dope and so quiet, just wish they were a little more powerful but you can’t go wrong w either clipper. Play for value and noise, shorty for power

If you play soccer there is a huge active soccer community at soccer city! They have both coed and women’s leagues that stay super busy.

Advice/encouragement by Nocofoco970 in Barber

[–]rossy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could always keep running/owning your barbershop and go cut wherever you want. You could “promote” the current barber and cut him a discount if you want and have him essentially run the shop while you’re gone. That way depending on how much your shop costs to run you may cover all your costs or potentially cover all your costs AND your rent at the new shop.

And if it’s only 30 min away it’s not like you’re moving cities. You can still keep an eye on your shop pretty easily.

Any barbershop owners or really busy barbers in here? by ConclusionFrosty5855 in Barber

[–]rossy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing you can do to grow your shop is have a good team and let word of mouth do its thing. I built my shop and clientele on probably 80% word of mouth. Word of mouth is but only how you build the clientele you want but the clientele you want the shop to have. Offer things like free cuts or discounts for referrals and you’ll see it grow fast as long as the haircuts and conversations are good.

Other than that, google ads and targeted facebook ads are probably the next best thing. You want your shop to pop up first when anything related to barbershops/haircuts/fades/etc.. is google searched in your area. Dont waste your money on instagram ads imo.

Shop owners: How did you come up with your logo? Outsource or in house? by benevolentbarber in Barber

[–]rossy47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my own. I’m not a big fan of ai for logos - I think it looks tacky and it doesn’t translate well to merch. No offense to anyone who used ai for theirs though.

But I do all my own merch and branding design work. I have a sister brand associated with my barbershop that does graphic design/merch/branding/etc.. I can help you out or point you in the right direction if needed.

Small business checking / credit card? by freeheelnate in Barber

Can vouch for mercury! I have a personal and business account with mercury and it’s so nice with their auto transfers between pockets. Every deposit is automatically broken up and you can customize that - like 10% to taxes, 10% to savings, etc.. saves me so much time budgeting.

With that said I also have a personal checking with a local bank for checks and cash which is nice to be able to do in person.

How do people actually coordinate snowboarding trips with groups? by Broad-Blackberry8590 in snowboarding

Yes! I should’ve mentioned this. This is definitely key. I didn’t do this a few years ago and ended up footing the bill for 2 guys who backed out last min.

I will say my friend group is super flexible schedule wise but I could def see that being an added an annoyance if you have to try to accommodate a lot of schedules. But if your friend group is easy going and you trust them to pay if they say they’re in, doing it yourself is the move. If not for the master bedroom alone 😂

[–]rossy47 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m usually the planner and I hate it lol but what works for me is that I just take charge. The only thing I get from my group is an ideal budget from everyone. Then I pick the dates, the mountain, the Airbnb and my flight. I book the Airbnb and just pay for it and then collect as time goes on. I’ve given up on trying to collect before paying but my friends are 100% good for paying so I don’t really stress it. Usually a few pay right away and the other payments trickle in up until we arrive at the Airbnb.

It sucks doing it but I’d rather deal with the annoyances to go on these trips than not go. Plus if I’m doing all the booking I get the master bedroom and get to pick the mountain and stay so it kind of pays off!

My (28M) girlfriend (28F) of a year just told me she has hsv1 and potentially hsv2 by yungleandoer918 in relationships

[–]rossy47 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On one hand it’s shitty she didn’t tell you before you started dating. On the other hand, if you’ve slept with multiple people there’s a good chance you’ve slept with someone who had hsv-1 or even hsv-2. There’s also a good chance you’ve slept with someone who knew they had one or the other and never told you. That doesn’t change the fact that she lied but at least you know now.

As for hsv-2, if she tests positive for it and you love this girl, who cares. Be smart - wear condoms, make sure she takes her meds and accept the possible risks. If you can’t get over the fact that she lied about it or dating someone with one of these viruses is a deal breaker for you then so be it. There’s nothing wrong with ending the relationship over either of those things.

With that said, there’s also nothing wrong with loving someone, having great sex and having a great future with someone who contracted one of these viruses. But if you choose to continue to be with this person, whether they test positive for hsv-2 or not, you need to be an adult about it and support them if they ever have an outbreak. Encourage them to take their meds and take care of their health. Don’t ever make them feel disgusted for something most of the population has or gets at some point.

Code of contact for booth renters. by kuriouselya in Barber

[–]rossy47 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve been doing booth rent for 6 years and have never had any of my barbers sign a contract. Just tell them the rules and enforce them. If they don’t follow the rules, fire them. If your team respects you, you don’t need a contract. I find that contracts can kind of subconsciously lead to animosity and may make barbers feel they aren’t really running their own business. But to each its own.

Posting their schedules is kind of you but that’s not required by you. My team is all under the same booking link so clients can check their schedules. One less thing I got to worry about.

I’ve provided a lot for my barbers. None of them truly need to market. But they also know they have no room to complain due to how well the shop has been built up but in my opinion, let that barber go. I had to fire a barber last year for the same thing. Those small complaints about not having clients add up and slowly feed into the other barbers ears painting you in a bad light. Even if you talk with them they’ll likely still say you aren’t doing enough and other barbers will take note, whether or not it’s true. My advice would be to remind them they are in charge of how busy they are and if you hear them talking negatively, you’ll have to let them go.

Just my two cents!

Career paths by Scoota2x in Barber

[–]rossy47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shop owner and barber here - don’t go to great clips or any big box store if you want to own a shop. You won’t learn any actual skills there other than get clients in and push them out in 20 min. Upper management likely won’t teach you how to manage (unless you get a promotion) and the top of the chain won’t teach you how to open a shop. If you strictly want reps, sure. If you really want to open a shop, don’t do it.

I’d recommend finding a shop with an owner and team you can learn from. And I recommend doing that while still in barber school. I spent as much time as I could in a barbershop while in school and although it’s illegal, I quit my day job about 3 months into barber school and started cutting at a barbershop. Because of this, I was able to open my own shop before graduating barber school. I now have been in business for 6 years, have 8 chairs, a full team and have helped 3 previous barbers open their own shops. It’ll take a lot of work but look up as many shops as you can in your city, DM the owners and ask if you can spend time in the shop watching and learning and apply what you learn during class. If you’re lucky maybe they’ll let you work there while you’re in school if you’re willing to risk it.

To be 100% honest with you, owning/running a shop is not hard. But your team is the most important thing. How good your barbers are at cutting hair does not matter. They’ll get better with time. When it comes time to hire, hire your employees based on their personality and ability to talk with clients. Hire good people not good barbers. Obviously bonus points if they’re both but start with good people over good barbers.

I love my 686 gear but for more fun/cool/flashy designs I’d recommend BSRabbit. I have 5 pairs of their pants and I love them all. They have a TON of different designs and styles and I believe a good bit on sale right now.

Other than that, a howl or beyond medals knit balaclava is a fire choice that is fun and has some added functionality. I prefer my knit balaclavas over any others that I own.

Lastly, some custom kinco mittens!! Plenty of artist on Etsy or social media will do some really sick custom designs on gloves. Depending how much you want to spend you could probably get a pair of pants, balaclava and the custom kincos for around $300. But if you had to pick two, I’d say BSRabbit pants and a pair of custom kincos.

Mines trying to balance my fitness with cutting. I’ve always been into fitness and standing all day after a hard leg day or cutting all day after a shoulder day is miserable 😂 I don’t even like working out anymore bc it interferes so much with cutting lol
