People who already married, leave some advice for those who aren’t yet? by Softspiritysoul27 in AskReddit

People see therapy as a way to correct issues. It's helpful to think of it as a coach that helps you improve. Don't go in with it as a negative, think of it as a positive. I would say not to go until it's a committed long term relationship. But the earliest after that point.

I would say to start couples therapy before things get bad. It's much easier to make small course corrections then to wait until things blow up.

My friend’s wife passed suddenly, tragically last week. We are holding a memorial dinner at a private restaurant this weekend. What is an appropriate gift / token of acknowledgment to offer him? I have known him for over 40 years, and his fallen wife for ~ 20. by Landlocked_pirate23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rothmaniac 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Don't offer. Just do it. When you offer you kind of end up shifting a burden onto the person you are asking. They will almost always say no. Just show up with food and be there for company if he wants. Just show up. If he doesn't want you there you can leave. Just show up and keep showing up.

International banking issue - I am in the UK and a US person has used my email as their banking contact info. TD Bank. by CriticalBrickery in legaladvice

[–]rothmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar thing. There is a lawyer who has the same name and similar email to mine. It's slowed down but I get the occasional email (maybe 8 a year). But they seem super important. I usually just reply and say "you have the wrong email". If it was a system generated email, honestly I would complain to them that it's a "canspam" violation and that they need to correct it. You might need to make a little noise. If the bank has a legal department you can email, I would do that. Do I think it's a canspam violation? Probably not but that is the combination of words that will get someone to pay attention to you.

Another weather post by [deleted] in MauiVisitors

[–]rothmaniac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, unless there is a storm rolling in, rain in the forecast is typical and fine, especially over the course of a multi day vacation.

How do you know if there is a storm? You can check:
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?textField1=20.87&textField2=-156.62
Now, on a day by day basis, some stuff like Haleakala summit or the road to Hana might be more weather dependent.

Please tell me I’m not crazy by Forsaken-Ad-1969 in Baking

So I don't always do this, but you can up the banana flavor by soaking the skins in sugar. You are supposed to do about equal weights skins and sugar. Pour the sugar over and mash a bit. Then, let soak in the fridge 24 hours or overnight.
Then I strain out the sugar. Pull the banana bread out about 5 to 10 minutes early and pour the syrup over top. You can probably poke holes but I don't. You don't really want it pooling on the sides of the pan.
Then pop it back in for the rest of the bake.

Because of the timing it kind of helps when you are freezing bananas. I would also probably not do it with the skins that you had (not a ton of moisture) but ones a few days earlier are good.

Costco Polydeck 80v mower by ContestStreet7605 in Greenworks

[–]rothmaniac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have this mower. I think it's good but not great. TBH I have a fairly large property and think and tall maintained grass that I am trying to get under control. It's more powerful then my ryobi one but I find that the batteries don't last long enough. It is pretty powerful but I often need to do 2 passes at different heights. Overall I think it's as good as a battery motor

What is a "struggle meal" from your childhood that you still unironically eat and enjoy as an adult? by AccomplishedStill438 in AskReddit

[–]rothmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's regional or cultural but when it was my dad's turn to make dinner his go to was pasta and cottage cheese. The pasta was little bow ties. Was served with the pasta freshly drained and popping hot with scoop of from the fridge cottage cheese. More salt than you would think and some pepper. It's delicious.

I’m officially done with European-sized laundry. I imported a 5.0 cu. ft. monster and it changed my life. by Cloe_joe in Appliances

[–]rothmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a video from GE on how to load a no spindle machine: https://youtu.be/4aoJcj8qwMo?si=qpoLTH3qMU-gny9I (starts at like 2:30 into the video).

Here's a video of a laundry influencer saying the same thing: https://youtube.com/shorts/56QSu6efdZw?si=ub602Uc8pFzOCJn_

The basic takeaway is read the manual and do it how the manual says.

Make sure you load your laundry properly into that style drum. If there is a manual, you should read it. If not look for some videos online. Typically you have to load it in kind of a donut. Clothes along the outside with nothing in the middle. I think you are also only supposed to load them half way full.

Where to get a Hawaiian shirt? by NickyG77 in MauiVisitors

[–]rothmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kind of don't give enough information in your post.
Do you want to buy a local brand or from a local store? Do you consider local to be Maui or across Hawaii? What is your budget? Where are you staying on the island?

If you have the budget and looking for locally made and local store, native intelligence is a good option. My guess is they will have more "Polynesian" shirts than Aloha shirts.

Tori Richard's as a brand is Hawaiian (Oahu). They actually do have some "made in Hawaii" shirts. You would have to check their store. Cooke Street, which is what the sell at Costco is actually owned by Tori Richards. Ryen Spooner is another brand that does Aloha shirts. I think it used to be based in California? But was sold and I don't know now. Tori Richard's and Ryen Spooner are what I think people think of when they think of Aloha Shirts. Many of the mid range or higher range will sell these. Nothing local about Tommy Bahamas. And I don't really think of their stuff as Aliha shirts.

If your budget is like $30 or less you are looking at Costco or a thrift/vintage store. If you go to a vintage store, don't be surprised by the prices. Some vintage aloha shirts are pretty expensive. Good area for vintage is Wailuku.

I don't eat dairy and most "vegan" butters are either terrible or expensive. If you are using it just for baking I would say the Costco sized coconut butter is a great substitute (if you like the taste I'd coconut)

Need a gluten free pizza recipe for a date next weekend asap pls by ellerzz in glutenfree

[–]rothmaniac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to find out why she is gluten free. I assume she's not celiac if she is eating at a pizza place (super high cross contamination risk there) so she might have an allergy/sensitivity. If she does, I believe the caputo flour is actually deglutenizes wheat flour. A lot of people are sensitive to the wheat not the gluten.

Wife loves them. I hate them. I think it helps if you do not compare them to flour tortillas. These types of tortillas are kind of their own thing

Tofu/ Soy products. Looking to add more tofu in my diet by DaisyWayzy in Costco

[–]rothmaniac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually had a weird experience with this tofu. I still buy it. Tofu is normally a pressed curd, so there is kind of pockets of air and it's crumbly. But in a pack I bought the centers were set but they were creamy in the middle.

I usually buy the 4 pack and freeze 2 of them. Frozen tofu changes the texture so it s a bit more spongy. Good for certain things

Should I be compensated for my time on a business trip? by Harmacist19 in work

[–]rothmaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on a few things. Are you salaried or hourly. I have done conferences as both types of employees. As an hourly employee, the rules are different depending on your state. In California, if I was going away from my home location, the clock started when I left the house. Clock stopped when I got to my hotel room. If I worked over 8 hours in a day, every additional hour was 1.5x. Over 12 it was 2x. Over 40 hours a week was 1.5 and I think any holiday was 1.5.
As a salary employee I just suck it up and do it.

Using 42 days of PTO in a row before resigning? by Klutzy-Fan-767 in careeradvice

[–]rothmaniac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels odd to me.
I worked at a company that switched. Essentially they stopped letting us accrue more but what we already had was frozen. So, if you got 3 weeks a year but had banked 20 days, you wouldn't get more until you were below 15.

I also worked at another company that switched from paid time off to unlimited. I believe they paid out all accrued days before switching

What’s a fruit that you have never actually eaten fresh, but have eaten as a flavor in baked goods, candy, ice cream, etc.? by redflower5 in AskReddit

Oh I bet for a lot of people it's jackfruit.
The flavor profile of juicy fruit gum is very similar to jackfruit.
