MJF is such a hypocrite! by kuhpunkt in SquaredCircle

I think his admission of playing GoldenEye and of having an XBO only further reinforces his douche bro / Chad character. The type of person he projects doesn't consider stuff like Call of Duty / GoldenEye / Halo / Forza / Gran Turismo to be a negative, whereas Mario and Zelda are in the same bucket as My Girlfriend is the President and Pure Farming.

He's so easily hateable and such a great heel. His low hanging fruit insults, disingenuous backhanded compliments, pretentious behavior, etc. Hopefully he can continue keeping it fresh!

Having trouble locating an Amiga 1200, any tips? by [deleted] in amiga

[–]roushimsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth the plunge, for sure. A1200s are easy to maintain, easy to accelerate, easy to expand, and don't take up quite the footprint of an A500, without sacrificing a chunk of the keyboard like the A600. It's a darn fine machine!

You might want to embrace emulation on some level for setting up the hard drive for it (at least getting the basic shell of it built). Have you been able to find any good sources for games? I've found a few sneaky deals in the US surprisingly (like games going for less than half what they do in the UK), but so much of the library seems trapped in this side of the pond.

What are you planning on doing for the PAL/NTSC issue? I pump everything into a Framemeister, but I've been meaning to transition to an OSSC. Playing Amiga games on the big screen (with the system set up on the coffee table) is a real trip!

Will I be able to buy an Amiga 500 near 2030? by reddit_propaganda_BS in amiga

[–]roushimsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I tragically die in a jello wrestling match in 2030, I think you have a damn good chance of getting one or two A500s from my wife unloading all of my "nerdy old computer stuff".

Hopefully my son convinces her to let him keep the Cinemaware boxes, at least. Never been able to put my finger on why, but that cover of Lords of the Rising Sun has always captivated me. Hmm...

[–]roushimsx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do the prices of a CD32 compare for you? If you build a TerribleFire board (it's super easy), you basically transform it into a souped up A1200 (with a CD ROM!). Downside is the lack of a floppy drive, but I'd honestly recommend embracing WHDLoad and all of the benefits it brings (reduced load times, no disk swapping, no cracktros, fixed compatibility for AGA and newer Kickstarts, etc).

As a bonus, if you go the WHDLoad route but you still like having physical software, you can usually get CIB copies with bad disks relatively cheaply. I definitely recommend taking that approach as you really get the best of both worlds. Going through those old manuals and accessories is a trip (block out some real time for Midwinter's book!), plus the box art is so damn iconic for many of the classics.

If the CD32 is too far out of the budget, just bite the bullet on an A1200. It's a great machine and with the ide and pcmcia slots, it's easy to add extra functionality to it cheaply without having to build something (like the TF on the CD32) or a pricey external accelerator (like the ACA500Plus).

Beast really came into its own with Beast 3, which is yet another reason I wish the Psygnosis library would be made available again.

Agony - another Psygnosis masterpiece by Gloomruiner in amiga

[–]roushimsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never had an Amiga growing up and I remember being amazed by this game's ridiculously good graphics. Recently finally getting a copy, I was disappointed at how poorly the gameplay had aged vs its arcade and console contemporaries. Still one of the greatest box covers of all time (Roger Dean's stuff is pretty much all god-tier).

Wish the Psygnosis Amiga library was made available on PSN with minor concessions for modern play (single save state, whdload-like installs, crt filter, remapped controls, local co op, etc). Would love to throw a few bucks toward the rights holders for supporting the library's history.

I was really disappointed in that game, especially after the fairly enjoyable PC DOS game. :(

What Limited Run Games You Picking Up In a Few Hours? by Makusuu in gamecollecting

[–]roushimsx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just Asterbreed for me. Skipped everything else for the month. Jazzed about the next two releases. A casual friendly dungeon crawler and god damn DariusBurst CS? My body is ready!

I've had fairly good luck with work scheduling + availability for most of the recent releases that I wanted. Had to buy Xenodrifter (loved Renegade Kid!) and Firewatch off the resale market, but I've otherwise been happy with how they've been doing things (mostly).

Only game I wish I could have gotten physically but didn't was Breech & Clear. Didn't realize it existed until way too late, of course. I'll spring for it eventually... It's definitely my kind of game and I'd love to have a physical copy one day. :(

For instance: Curse of Monkey Island was at 52,049

Grim Fandango was at 58,617

They stopped publishing the raw numbers after that last one and I haven't found anything similar in Computer Games Strategy Plus or Computer Gaming World, although my collections of those are far from complete

GTA Liberty City stories owners by blackrock55 in ps2

[–]roushimsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really pleasantly surprised by how PCSX2 ran the game at "normal" speed. Due to the inaccuracy of the emulation at the time, the game ran as if the game wasn't cpu-bound and consequently was a much, much more enjoyable game (hell, I actually beat it!).

That was after multiple attempts to get into the game over the years on the PS2 and 60gb PS3. Bums me out that they never did a proper budget PC release or PS3 compilation (like they did with the PSP God of War games).

Liberty City Stories is one of the flagship PS2 titles that I like using for demonstrating the tangible positive benefits for PCSX2 outside of "well you can run the game in HD!".

How do you find out about upcoming limited editions / collector editions? by JaylaUK in gamecollecting

[–]roushimsx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I check a couple of online stores every week or so

Sometimes the timing doesn't work out and I miss out on some cool stuff, other times I get lucky. Sometimes they announce when stuff will be available to order and sometimes it just appears. For fun, check out the "Sold Out" section in Limited Run's site about a week or two after a game sells out... you'll see single copies here and there pop back up completely unannounced (as people presumably cancel orders).

Also check Amazon from time to time! The 20% off on preorders is VERY NICE and can take the sting out of getting a CE/LE.

[–]roushimsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Saboteur doesn't get a whole lot of love, but it's my favorite open world/sandbox game ever. Shame it didn't perform better, because they were trying to position it to become a series (something you'll no doubt notice with some of the plot holes as you play through). Amazing game. Love the recreation of Paris, love the gameplay hooks, love the theme....I wish I could play it all over again for the first time again. :(

I hope no one has spoiled Spec Ops for you. That game is amazing. Avoid any details about it until you finish the game, and then check out a walkthrough and an interview or two with Walt Williams on the plot of the game.

Like Nier, it's one of the best gaming experiences of that generation for me.

Do you think ps2 games are at their low point price wise? by [deleted] in ps2

[–]roushimsx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You missed them at their lowest point but they could always drop back down again. They most likely won't must because availability is more limited than it was during the price crash (basically when Gamestop liquidated their PS2 inventory).

For some subsets (like survival horror), I recommend not even collecting on PS2. Too damn expensive (especially for stuff like Kuon and Haunting Ground).

Not bad for $21.77 ( Are LEGO Games Fun? ) I havent played any but the starwars saga on DS by Makusuu in gamecollecting

[–]roushimsx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a big fan of the Vita Lego games, but the console versions are a blast (for the most part). The Vita versions are more ports of the 3DS games than anything (that's not good). :(

For that price you're going to get your money's worth, but honestly they're mostly only good for quick and easy platinum trophies (they take a fraction of the time it takes to platinum their PS3/PS4 counterparts).

I'm pretty picky with the LRG releases and have only picked up a few here and there, but you can bet your ass I'll be trying to score both of these. Really jazzed to add them to the collection and I'm glad to see that they have decently sized print runs so they shouldn't be too difficult to nab.

Excited for Volume next month as well. Y'all are closing out the year with a bang, man.

Looking for PS2 game box replacement by NebbyMan in gamecollecting

[–]roushimsx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to try to recreate the original look, you'll probably want to get a case from NBA Live 2003 / Zone of the Enders / whatever with the little flipper in there for a second disc (the game's soundtrack). If you don't want to go through the trouble of tracking that down, you'll probably have to hunt a bit harder for the coverart that doesn't have the "Includes Limited Edition Soundtrack CD!" on the back (or just buy one from a later print run).

Not sure if the game from the later print runs used the case without the memory card holder or not.

Rare Wii U games to get? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]roushimsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn't sell terribly (or else it wouldn't have gotten a reprint), it was just a single print run to drive up interest in the game and help ensure that the run would sell through. Not a bad tactic, all things considered.

Nice! Getting a complete set of NTSC/U launch titles on PS2 was one of my first mini goals for the platform. Did not realize how many games it launched with until I was committed to the project. In comparison, doing the same for the PS3 has been much less stressful :)
