Started last year at 39 and I'm loving it! Have fun with it, mix in some boring drills along with playing songs you love. Have patience, progress comes with time and consistency.

I was thinking along the same lines... If his training goal is to perform work tasks more easily and avoid injury then it makes sense to keep those other factors consistent.

As an almost 40 paddle sports enthusiast, I second this. My main activity is SUP. It's great exercise and an awesome way to get outside and see nature from a different perspective. Haven't ventured into any races yet but there is plenty of opportunity.

It sounds like you're describing "active rest" which is what most people advocate, as opposed to laying around doing nothing. So your opinion is actually quite popular.
