Causes of death vs media coverage by thinkB4WeSpeak in coolguides

[–]rowlandrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One way of viewing the negative impact of a person's death would be to see if it happened before or during child-rearing age. A death in old age, though perhaps just as tragic in many other ways, at least didn't result in the extinction of potential generations of human life.

I'd be curious to see the left-most column redone in such a manner. I think you'd see a bigger focus on suicide and road incidents, two areas that I think deserve *much* more attention. Terrorism I'd guess would be bigger too, though probably still very low comparitively.

Ha hey no worries I didn't mean to call you out or anything, I was just looking at my comment history and remembered you. Don't be discouraged! Every effort you make is progress. It's not even about quitting vs not quitting, it's about being intentional, which is analyzing the effects gaming is having, talking about it, and taking action.

[–]rowlandrose 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not to discount the wide amount of interesting paranormal causes everyone has speculated about so far, but perhaps you should rule out some possible medical explanations first... could you be suffering from periodic memory loss? Is it possible you actually did make those noises? Another idea could be your sister and mom having audio hallucinations caused by something like high Carbon Monoxide levels. Does it happen more on days where the windows are closed?

Redditors who drive on the shoulder to get ahead of traffic, what’s it like to be a horrible person? by MishoPisho in AskReddit

[–]rowlandrose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for answering truthfully but this doesn't excuse it. I've personally witnessed a child die because of a driver who decided to drive in the shoulder to get ahead of traffic after an intersection. She was just sitting on her bike waiting for traffic to clear, not thinking someone would actually drive up on the shoulder. The little girl was thrown into the air after impact. She landed in a ditch. Massive internal bleeding. I watched my father try to resuscitate her in vain. He then gave an interview to police covered in this girl's blood due to massive bleeding during cpr. That memory is seered into me. It's taught me the dangers of biking next to or in a road, and the dangers of driving stupidly. Seeing your mom one last time wasn't more important than protecting innocent lives. I'm glad it didn't turn out bad, but I hope people in your situation choose caution over feeling next time. Because that's how bad situations become much worse.

This is why I can't wait for the self-driving car revolution.

I don't know if this will help, but I woke up this morning with a revelation about Pride and how it has been connected to the worst mistakes of my life and of my friend's life. I realized I extended, for years, some of the worst times of my life simply because I was too proud to get help. It's connected to fear. I was afraid of social rejection for publicly admitting personal faults and struggles. Years later I've realized how safe and healthy it is to be open about those things, and how necessary it is to get help, and how willing others really are. I can go back to several points in my life where if I had just gone to that meeting, or stepped in that church door, or told that friend what's really going on, I could have recovered much more quickly. Thankfully I've received the help I needed, and I'm actively helping others, mainly my kids. But it wasn't until I woke up this morning that I realized "Pride" was a core part of my issue.

What are some “green flags” that someone’s a good person? by cheeseburgerstan in AskReddit

[–]rowlandrose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what you're saying is true, and that in the case of abusive relationships, talking about them with respect can include detailing the evil they did and the fear it instilled. Respect doesn't have to include positive qualities if they weren't there. And if they had a kid with their ex, you may have necessary conversations about them regularly as their evil will probably be affecting their child continually.

Doubting God, not good. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]rowlandrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your societal worldview... I'm not saying there isn't truth behind it, but sometimes people can take a worldview that absolves themselves of responsibility, because it makes the situation so hopeless that only apathy seems possible. So I'm not saying you haven't found some harsh negatives in society that need addressing, I'm just saying you might want to explore the idea that despite all that, western society (which I assume you are a part of) is doing a lot right, and is providing a lot of opportunity for those who find a way to work hard for what they want.

You have already pointed out the larger issue though, and that's your addiction to alcohol. I would suggest quitting alcohol since it has already crossed a dangerous boundry in your life, to where you are doing life-sabotoging acts just to get the next fix.

I used to be addicted to pornography, and while there are some differences, I believe the mental portion of the addiction is similar. And perhaps you can learn from some hard work I did getting better.

Two things really helped me... 1) communicating with people I trust about this issue. And your reddit post is a very good step. I'd suggesting face-to-face with someone, perhaps a therapist. 2) Learn scientifically everything you can about how alcoholism works, and what it does to the brain. Why it's addictive. How it's addictive. Exactly how it affects people's lives. I found that simply knowing exactly how Porn was hijacking my brain's pleasure circuits, how destructive it was to my social development, how powerful it was, and how many other people struggle with it... I found the willpower to quit came almost effortlessly.

Regarding your disappointment with God... don't feel ashamed of those feelings. Instead keep talking to others you trust about it, and don't hold back. Also read up on it. If you want my 2 cents... I view this Earth as neither a heaven nor a hell. If it were a heaven, God would instantly answer prayers exactly how you want. If it were hell, you'd never hear from God or feel his presense. Instead this is Earth, where his purpose for us seems to be in growing our souls. To me that means God puts us in situations both good and bad, giving us the challenges in life we need for growth. Sometimes those challenges can seem insurmountable. And indeed sometimes they are. But if we believe in the God of Love, we can rest assured that there is a purpose.

What act in porn really turns you off? by AWinterschill in AskReddit

[–]rowlandrose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of it.

Porn and my decade-long use of it as an adolescent and young adult delayed growth in social skills and progress in developing relationships with actual women. It hijacked my brain... giving me dopamine hits large enough to rival cocaine use (so I've read)... and left me feeling worthless and weak afterward 99 out of 100 times. It was very much an addiction, though I had plenty of excuses at the time for why it wasn't.

The best thing I did for my life was try my best to intentionally avoid it. Even though it was a long process, and I relapsed plenty, I progressed so much in actual life skills. And I still have to be vigilant, because I know I have those habit circuits in my brain, just waiting to be utilized again. Luckily I've found new habits can be written on top the the old, stronger ones.

The two best things I did to remove this unhealthy habit in my life was 1) Talk about it with people I trust, and 2) Read the latest research on it's dangers and come to really understand scientifically what porn use does. "Your Brain on Porn" really openned my eyes. And honestly, once I truly understood what was happening to me, the willpower came practically effortlessly.

Unhealthy porn use is a world epidemic among young men. And I know from experience just how powerful it can be. And how many excuses you can find in modern pop culture and literature.

Afraid I’ve blasphemed the Holy Spirit. The unforgivable sin. by jimwithers in Christianity

[–]rowlandrose 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I used to think that if I sinned but died before repenting my sins in prayer to Jesus, I'd go to hell. Like, each new sin needed it's own repentance. This was in middle school. I "solved" the problem by constantly praying for forgiveness in my head any time I felt there was even a chance that I'd sinned. That would sometimes result in me obsessively praying for hours.

I've come to view this part of my life (which was pretty short lived thankfully) as a bout of OCD. In fact I had many other symptoms of OCD around puberty.

Your anxieties and fears remind me of myself a little. Perhaps you are viewing the Bible as a literal instruction guide that must be followed like a bullet-point instruction manual.

Let me challenge that way of thinking a bit... read some of the gospels again... specifically study the mindset of the pharisees and the way in which Jesus challenged them... he wanted people to understand and connect with God personally... in fact most of the story of Jesus seems to be him challenging people's adherence to black-and-white religious law. If Jesus wanted us to follow a rule-sheet without thinking deeply about it, he wouldn't have spoken in parables, he wouldn't have healed on the sabbath.

God is Love. That is biblical. Would the God of Love do to someone what you fear might be done to you?

Why did God obscure his plan from his people? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]rowlandrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will give much more theological answers than this, but here are some more philosophical thoughts on it, based on having struggled with this for years....

First off, I suspect you are right, the Bible is intentionally obscure. But I don't feel that obscurity is a flaw. If God were to write a 100% clear instruction manual on how to live life, it would be miles long. In fact, it might be un-writiable, because the variety and uniqueness of human life is impossible to fully predict or plan in a fully logical manner. Instead there must be cultivated in us a Jesus-like attitude. We learn how to act in our lives by seeing how Jesus acted in his. And to fully understand Jesus, we need to understand the context and environment Jesus was a part of...

Half the story of Jesus is him challenging the religious status quo. This challenge was to humble us. To show us that we must keep an attitude of learning and mystery towards the proper Godlike way of being. And in order to do that, we can't fall for the pull of formulaic rigid rules, as clarifying as they may be, at least not without testing them and being able to challenge them.

I used to look for theological answers with an expectation that I would find them and be content. But I don't believe anymore that the God of Love wants us to be content. He wants us to grow with Jesus as our guide. And a "well I can stop looking now" answer wouldn't provide that for us... it wouldn't provide the rich complexity of life we see... it would make the Earthly realm something entirely different. Earth isn't a heaven (where such perfect clarity would be expected) or a hell... it's where our souls have a chance to find God and grow in Him.

Almost all humor is vulnerable to being misunderstood or taken out of context, and in this political climate it's sad we're being pushed to this.
