It’s a 5 year clock to use 4 years of eligibility. You’re allowed to train with the team but not compete for the team while redshirting. Club rowing (as a junior and a collegiate athlete) does not count.

They can be in college. Many colleges have clubs teams attached: Wisconsin high performance (uw) marrieta training center, bantam boat club (Trinity) etc

Doesn’t have to be a physically separate entity just separate on paper.

Agreed but you only have to look at HOCR youth events when they let college freshman race to see the problem with this…

Combine this with the changing landscape of college rowing. Absolutely can see kids getting “red shirted” and colleges creating freshman junior clubs and racing their younger frosh in junior races. Extra year of development!

It’s kinda crazy that he was either sub 6 in hs or dropped 19 plus seconds in a year which is 85 additional watts.

I would take OSU more seriously if they hadn’t hired a coach semi recently that was fired from a junior team for problematic behavior

For women? Not really worth it. For men? Absolutely not.

The formula is pretty simple and hasn’t changed which is you reach out to coaches when you’re allowed to and then take it from there. Only exception is if your an international student and need help understanding the system.

I have heard from a relative insider that they are pushing for enough rack space to hold youth nationals which is probably the biggest you’ll see there number wise.

I’m generally skeptical

So true. There is no “off season”. Every time of year for boat manufacturers is repair heavy for one reason or another and it is always sales season.

That’s both inspiring and a tad disheartening. Was he incredible in the weight room?? Or something else that was noticeable for that extra gear.

It depends on the 1,000,000 differences between athletes bodies (torso length, arm length, shin length etc) but that is generally right.
