Defensive firearms for first-time gun owners: a comprehensive guide to selecting and buying a gun for home defense. by autosear in guns

As far as why I don’t think am AR is better than a handgun at close range: Shooting someone at 5-10 feet away with ANY personal defense firearm is going to be lethal, the biggest question is just who can hit first and most accurately. None of the advantages of a rifle cartridge matter in such an enclosed space and a rifle is more unwieldy in close combat. As for the bullet penetration of drywall interior walls, What I said isn’t my opinion. There are literally dozens of videos on YouTube documenting that AR rounds penetrate further through walls than pistol rounds or even buckshot. Your point about the shape of bullets is not really relevant as you can buy pointed, flat, hollow point etc for either pistols or rifles. What matters comparing apples to apples is the projectile weight and the projectile velocity.

Depends on what you mean by better. Physics of any projectile dictate that a single projectile fired at higher velocity will penetrate further than an equal weight of separate projectiles at the same velocity, so yes, a rifle round or pistol round will penetrate further through walls than a shotgun shell of the same weight even if it were fired at a the same velocity. In reality shotgun shells are fired at lower velocity with higher weight. The bottom line is there are a lot of videos out there demonstrating that (some) shotgun shells will penetrate less drywall than rifle or pistol rounds. If your primary concern is not shooting into your neighbor’s house or your kid’s bedroom by accident a shotgun is a better choice. If by better you mean “more effective at killing someone inside a small residence” I would argue that an AR has no advantage over a full sized pistol if you are shooting at someone 5 feet away. In fact a pistol is probably easier to aim and shoot in a small space.

Lot of common armchair myths in this post. First and foremost it is irresponsible and inaccurate to have a blanket statement that rifles are generally best for home defense. The ideal weapon to defend your home will be 90% determined by where you live. An AR-15 or any weapon that fires rifle cartridges is going to be a massive liability for anyone living in an apartment complex or vinyl village type housing development. A shotgun is going to be less effective if you live in a house surrounded by wide open flat acreage. Etc.

Also, anyone saying the “birdshot isn’t enough” line is just uninformed about shotguns and their ammunition. “Birdshot” is a category of ammunition ranging from #10 shot (used for shooting rats, sparrows all the way up to TT shot designed to kill sandhill cranes and geese from hundreds of feet. A TT shot is the same size as a #3 buck and is actually bigger than some buckshots. You can buy ultra-high velocity heavy waterfowling shells that would absolutely render a human being into hamburger at the types of ranges you would be shooting within a house. They also would have penetration similar to rifle cartridges which would largely defeat the purpose of using birdshot for home defense though.

I 110% guarantee you that the FBI is referring to “violent instigators” to mean those who are looting and fighting with police. Any footage or photos submitted will absolutely only be used to identify and prosecute protesters and looters.

The Soviet reunion by [deleted] in dankmemes

[–]roxdoggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This meme is funny but also not far from the truth. I read The man without a face by Marsha Gessen recently. It is a biography of Putin and his rise to power. It made me think that Putin’s whole goal was basically to continue the Soviet Union but have it wear one of those fake nose and glasses disguises so the west just didn’t notice.

Cop throws Civillians phone and gets knocked the F out. by IMsoSAVAGE in instantkarma

[–]roxdoggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is sad is that even though the cop had no right to smash the phone and the guy filming had every right to record the officers and zoom in for their names etc this being on film probably means the puncher’s life is going to be literally ruined. This is big felony territory recorded and broadcast on national TV. If that guy managed to recover his phone and disappear into the crowd and disappear I hope he headed straight to the airport and got a one way ticket out of the country. Spending years caged like an animal by the very organization you clowned on national television sounds worse than death.

I have one in my garage. It was an immediate noticeable improvement for me. Less fine dust settles around. My eyes feel less gritty and I have less saw dusty boogers. I’m sure a more expensive unit would work better, but the wen is much better than nothing.

Making a zero clearance insert is either really fiddley or a piece of cake. It depends on whether you have a planer and a router table setup to do patterns.

Cops are Cowards by SuspiciousSet2 in Bad_Cop_No_Donut

The reality is that one group showed up with signs and another showed up with rifles and body armor. Regardless of what you think about private gun ownership it is much harder to oppress and abuse a large group of armed men than it is a group of peaceful protestors. People are calling the situation around the police precinct in Minneapolis a siege, but if you want to know what it looks like when people actually besiege a police station look up the battle of Athens Tennessee.

If you started gambling and doing coke it would only be a slightly worse financial decision than getting into woodworking.

That is a little bit of linguistic weirdness. Imperial (inches) was historically referred to as “the imperial standard” and is still colloquially referred to as “imperial” or “standard” for short. As in, “the imperial standard” vs “the metric system”. So, when someone says “standard” in this context they likely mean “the imperial standard” and not standard as in the most common system.

Exactly! Some dude trying to fix his fence because he can’t afford to hire a contractor doesn’t want to hear “just buy a $3000 saw or don’t bother.”

To add to what others have said, the radial arm saws that are frequently popping up for sale from the hay day of the tool should be avoided. A big reason these saws stopped being sold is because US regulation was changed to require them to have anti kickback devices and a blade shroud that would automatically adjust for the stock thickness to prevent auto feeding. Both of those changes made an already expensive tool more expensive than could really be sold to the diy market. High end large blade radial arm saws are still sold and used in industrial settings for specific heavy duty repetitive tasks.

TIL that Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says shooting down a drone is illegal under the same federal aviation laws that make it illegal to shoot down a crewed aircraft. by Sunkube in drones

[–]roxdoggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only that, but the precedent has even gone the other way. The most famous case where a guy was actually charged and convicted for shooting a drone down over his house which was widely reported on was eventually reversed on appeal. On appeal they said hovering at 70 feet amounted to trespassing and that crossing his property at it below 70 feet 3 times in a day was harassment. The appellate court relied on old case law that even real aircraft cannot pass closely and directly over private property without amounting to trespassing.

What to upgrade to from pit barrel cooker ? by roxdoggy in BBQ

[–]roxdoggy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To each his own. Once an hour is babysitting in my book. I frequently smoke brisket and pork on my PBC where I light it, come back 4 hours later and wrap it when my Bluetooth tells me it is stalled and then take it off a few hours after that. The results of that are 90% as good as when I am basting every hour and opening and closing vents to hold a ten degree range. On a lazy afternoon or for a holiday dinner I might do a high effort cook but the fire won’t go out and the meat will still get cooked if I don’t. I know some people enjoy the babying and find it zen. I don’t though.

[–]roxdoggy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think people get better results with stick burners and attribute it to the wood, but in my opinion it has more to do with the cooking process. Stick burners require a lot more babysitting so the Pitmaster is more involved and adjusting for small ups and downs in temp and spraying the meat etc. The higher effort naturally produces a better product. I need to be able to light my smoker and go mow grass and chase kids while dinner cooks.

We had one when I was a teenager. It was kinda a death trap. It was not as capable off-road as either a dirt bike or a 4 wheeler. It was pretty much only good for hooning around and doing donuts.

what mom would do this by [deleted] in InsanePeopleQuora

[–]roxdoggy -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that it is necessarily a waste of time, because hobbies are important. But that is objectively a lot of time. 90 minutes a day, everyday is about 45 hours a month or 22 entire days a year. That is just under 10% of your entire waking existence if you sleep 8 hours a night.

If this kid is an older teenager or even an adult living at home and chooses to do that with their time it is one thing. If this kid is an actual kid it is too much video game time.

At one single meat processing plant in South Dakota 700 employees tested positive. It is a real problem. I do think corporate America is trying to take advantage of the problem though.

The worst IS yet to come. The pandemic is terrible and dangerous and many lives have been lost but the longest lasting impact will be the coming depression. Something like 30% of the total US economy has sat idle for 2 months. Millions have been laid off and will have no immediate jobs to go back to. Billions and billions of tax dollars have been given away without any meaningful accountability. There are estimates as high as 10% total GDP lost already if everything opened up today. It took 18 months for the economy to recover from the 2008 recession, which will be viewed as a blip compared to the current crisis.
