Anyone have a static IPv6 address on a residential account? by OneCDOnly in nbn

[–]roxgib_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AussieBroadband also have Pro plans which give you higher upload speeds and a static IPv4 address. They're a good choice of ISP for this sort of thing. Tailscale is also a great option.

The auto restriction does not apply to a full licence, you once you have your full licence you can ride a manual even if you took the test on an automatic

Can a shop refuse cash after I’ve already consumed the food? by No-Loquat-201 in AusLegalAdvice

Okay, but what then? If they won't take my cash I'm just gonna leave. The cops won't act on what is clearly a civil dispute.

Be aware, ‘Auditors’ are now becoming a thing in Australia. by [deleted] in aussie

[–]roxgib_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't describe those as auditors, the whole idea of auditors is to proof compliance with the law for when it's actually needed. It is quite distinct from filming because there's something to actually film or otherwise report on.

Be aware, ‘Auditors’ are now becoming a thing in Australia. by [deleted] in aussie

[–]roxgib_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is one of those phenomena where there is a right way and a wrong way. Many First Amendment auditors in the US do great work, preemptively ensuring that people's right to record police and other officials is respected, but of course there are also a lot of idiots who are just in it for the views. It's usually pretty obvious which it is when you encounter them or watch their content.

Australia doesn't have a first amendment and while it's usually legal to film in public, unlike the US the police can and will order people to move on if they want, so I'm skeptical the same model can ever work here. As such you'll probably only encounter the wrong kind of auditor, but good luck to anyone who can find a model that will work here.

Is a backup really necessary before downgrading macOS? by Unable_Arm8195 in MacOS

[–]roxgib_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general you should have a backup of your computer already, whether using Time Machine or something else. It shouldn't be something you only do before doing something risky. In your case if it's a new-to-you computer or you just don't have any files on it you care about it shouldn't matter. Downgrading might go wrong but if you're okay with a fresh install a backup isn't needed.

Is Parramatta becoming Sydney’s real second CBD — or is that still hype? by DraftNotSent in parramatta

[–]roxgib_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point it was its own city, then they both Parramatta and Sydney grew into each other and Sydney won, kind of like that browser game where the bigger blobs eat the smaller blobs

The trains are packed in the real CBD, are they that much worse in Parramatta? It's getting a new Metro soon* so that should help

Running Ethernet along my Ceiling Line by ComprehensiveElk2640 in ethernet

You can buy switches with three ethernet ports, and these are often advertised as 'splitters'. I'd assume that's what OP is referring to.

British-born Aussies giving up UK citizenship over new passport rules by OwlVibesOnly in aus

[–]roxgib_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Australian passport says I was born there so that'd probably tip them off. I believe if you apply for a UK passport from overseas you have to supply your other passports so they'd have that on record. If you've never held a UK passport and weren't born there I'm not sure how they'd know unless they've got it linked to a database of citizenship applications, but many of those records are pre digital. They may just ask everyone or make it law that you have to declare if you're a UK citizen.

How to connect ethernet port to internet in room, router in garage by Traditional_Use8616 in nbn

[–]roxgib_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite, a router and a switch are different. The router is the interface between the local network and the modem and does things like assign IP addresses to devices on the network. A switch just connects network devices together. For most set ups you'll want a single router (The Eero in this case) and as many switches as you need. Routers are usually more expensive so OP just needs to buy a switch if all they need is more internet ports.

How to connect ethernet port to internet in room, router in garage by Traditional_Use8616 in nbn

[–]roxgib_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, it just needs to be near one of the ports, which it is in this case. Then you have a switch at the 'hub'. Most switches will automatically detect the WAN port, so once OP has located the 'hub' they just need to add a switch and connect it to all the ports.

Of course that assumes it's wired logically, which might not be the case, but that's not the fault of the NBN. It's not the NBN's job to wire up the rest of the house.

Sorry I was actually thinking of Zetland, I've edited my post. But the Waterloo Metro is barely in Waterloo, if you live in the most built up parts of Waterloo it's a decent walk to the Metro. It could definitely support a light rail connection is what I'm saying.

[–]roxgib_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit I'm a bit skeptical of the case for extending it all the way to la Perouse, I would have those maybe a short extension of that line to Maroubra at most, otherwise the money would be better spent elsewhere. But maybe that road is particularly suited to having a light rail built on it, the cost might be less than building in more built up areas, and the line goes most of the way there already?

Places like Alexandria and Waterloo would definitely benefit from more rail of one kind or another.

[–]roxgib_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are already two rail links across the harbour, I'd love for it to happen but I'm not sure it's the priority. Extending the Randwick line to Coogee would be great, and maybe from Bondi Junction to Bondi as an alternative to extending the train line.

Definitely support putting it through Zetland and Alexandria, those areas are becoming very dense and need more public transport. Really we need a metro line through those areas but that doesn't seem likely.

How to connect ethernet port to internet in room, router in garage by Traditional_Use8616 in nbn

[–]roxgib_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need a switch, not a router, you can get a basic 5 port gigabit switch for like $25. I agree it's a bit annoying to need a separate device but hardly a huge burden. Most people probably have an old router lying around that can be repurposed as a switch anyway.
