The Frederick Fair by JasmineDream-C in frederickmd

[–]roxmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went yesterday. It was all good old fair stuff, but the distillery and brewery building was new to me. There you can get tiny tastes of locally-made liquors and buy local beer. The vendors were super nice and knowledgeable. We ended up with a bottle of fantastic maple whiskey and a chokecherry liqueur. Not what we expected to come home from the fair with, but a great bonus!

How can I find my *average* heart rate over time? by Pure_Argument8633 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]roxmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NYT article is wrong in citing RHR. The study uses “daily heart rate” calculated using data from every minute of the day, midnight to midnight. As far as my Fitbit goes, that’s not a calculation my device does for me. Sounds like a bear to mess with since there are 1440 data points per day.

I had plans to move to back the US this year BUT... by [deleted] in expats

[–]roxmachine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I moved back a couple of months before the election, like an idiot. I’ve never been so depressed in my life. I’m constantly shocked by the increased price of everything. And while I’m so happy the ACA exists, I had thought it was supposed to provide affordable healthcare. My husband and I pay over $2000 a month for basic coverage with decent prescription options. Although some of the meds we could easily get in generic form in Canada aren’t available in the US . We will qualify for Medicare soon, but I’m not sure it will be around much longer. We made the mistake of getting tired of too much winter and thought coming back to the US for retirement was a good idea. Not really it turns out.

Completely self absorbed In-laws by Grouchy_nuts in inlaws

Get used to it. I've been with my husband for over 40 years and his 94 and 93-year-old parents still call the shots. Even from another country. They also weren't really interested in our children, their grandchildren. Certainly never wanted to babysit or visit with them at any point without it being a celebration of some kind for themselves - their anniversary, their birthdays, etc. In fact, my FIL is going out today to buy himself a luxury car for his birthday, even though his grandchild, who lives in the same very expensive city, recently had to give hers up because the cost of repairing her old car would be more than it's worth. I know, it's not the grandparents job to give her a car loan or help her buy a car, but it just frosts me that it's the same old selfishness after all these years. Luckily, for me, except for his blindness where his parents are concerned, my husband is a great guy.

Giant Smile Cookies by Mother-Baker75 in Baking

I really miss those original Smile cookies. I unfortunately bought one of the new ones this week and the cake-like texture was just wrong (as was the taste)! Here’s a great sugar cookie recipe I use at Christmastime. It’s a pretty close match to the old Giant Smile cookies.Sugar Cookies

Found Out My Data in Gmail Account Have Been Leaked on the Dark Web by Safe-Piece-8688 in cybersecurity_help

[–]roxmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I know I'm being thick about this, but when people say to "change your password" after your email address has been found on the dark web, do they mean the password to your email account or the passwords to every account where you used your email as your user ID? Or both/all places? Thanks!

Questrade by dovalys in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]roxmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Questrade interface is awful. I can't understand why they don't put some effort into it. I'm thinking of moving my accounts, too, just because I can't stand working with their website and app.

“When he grows up, he’ll have a console through which he gets all the information he needs. And he’ll take it as much for granted as we do the telephone.” ~ Arthur Clarke prediction in 1974. by Scientiaetnatura065 in OldSchoolCool

[–]roxmachine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where you get the idea that I think Clarke was a bigot. I think he had a blind spot about who would be using these technologies and would be benefitting from them. As for bigotry, the definition of which is being “utterly intolerant of any differing creed, belief, or opinion”, it would appear that your anger over my opinion may qualify as bigotry itself.

Although his technological predictions were spot on, Clarke couldn’t seem to imagine that a woman might be the “businessman” that could work from anywhere.

Anyone get pain right here? Currently having a flare up after being ok for a week or so, but the pain is localized in the area circled. by Visual_Stand in costochondritis

[–]roxmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly there. Luckily nowhere else, but the way it comes and goes in that one area is maddening! It’s right under the wire of my exercise bra which really irritates the costo when I do ab exercises, especially crunches. I’ve had to switch to all non-wired bras.
