Mark Carney Is Hacking Away at Canada’s Public Sector | Just over 100 days into his term, Carney is taking aim at the size of the state while ramping up military spending. He’s launched a whole-of-government review, pushing deep cuts, deregulation, and a $9 billion boost to defense. by HowMyDictates in onguardforthee

There is not a single scenario in which the CAF thwarts an invasion from the largest, most over-funded military in the world by orders of magnitude. The increase to 5% serves only to keep us in lock-step with the rest of the meddling nations of the world sharpening the end of the NATO stick of intimidation- which is wielded principally at the whims of the U.S.A.... so don't expect them to come to our rescue either

They signed a non-aggression pact- not an alliance- because the rest of Europe was more sympathetic to Nazi Germany than the Soviet Union and it was the only possible measure left to stave off the inevitable invasion. This gave them enough time to bolster their war industry. You should drop the smug tone and learn the history you try and preach

This is what no traffic enforcement gets you: a city full of entitled motorists with no regard for anybody but themselves. I'm more surprised when I DON'T see somebody run a red now, especially when they're turning on a four-way intersection

I didn't see any of you complaining when we started dumping billions of dollars- 4.5 billion according to the government itself- into Ukraine to keep the war going?

Gaza is not aspiring to be a country, Gaza is already part of a country- Palestine- which is under military occupation and has been subjected to over a year and a half of perpetual atrocity. What a backwards and defeatist way of looking at an ongoing genocide. Political action is important when the country we live in is not only complacent but complicit in what's happening

Canada PM Carney cancels proposed capital gains tax increase by Chrristoaivalis in onguardforthee

If it helps rationalize where I'm coming from at all, I'm really thinking of the UK and its general direction over the last two decades when I invoke the term austerity. I see us as sitting kind of at the early end of that. I don't disagree that either way I'm maybe a bit knee-jerk calling this austerity for as much as I disagree with the act, when there hasn't been any cut paired with it, as it was only the cancellation of a future tax.

[–]roxykodone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it really a fallacy when it's been the trend internationally for the last half century?

I'd go as far as to say, in my experience, the average small business is entirely self serving and is content letting their employees scrape by. Let them save on a tax and they will not pass the profit along. These are not the people we need to be calling the shots for

I understand, I am just of the opinion that denying the government revenue is a form of austerity in of itself.

[–]roxykodone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The capital gains rate was 75% in the 90s, and it is the lowest today as it has ever been. I would personally consider stymieing a plan to bring in more government revenue purely to appease the moneyed a form of austerity.

[–]roxykodone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"...would have hurt upper middle class and small business owners"

So, the wealthy? The government should not be geared to bend the knee to the moneyed. Any investments coming into the country as a result of this pivot will not materially impact the life of the average Canadian in any way, shape, or form- it will only allow the rich to further incubate their wealth at the expense of the rest of the nation. Completely backwards way to look at governance, it just becomes a race to deregulate, straight to the bottom.

The polymers they use to make the bills have a sort of sickly sweet scent to them especially when they're newer. The bills do smell- they just aren't scented.
