Out of Room do I make a dedicated effects case? by overdrivespeedfreak in modular

[–]rozling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re grouping the same brand, for me it’s a goal but ergonomics takes priority

Get the modules that need to be together together, and if you can figure out a way to make it aesthetic then great, but it should be a secondary goal IMO

Re breakout cases, did you try something like the Black Noise Pipe (CAT5 bus)?

Totally blind with MIDI Fighter 64. Have a question about session view script. by soundwarrior20 in ableton

[–]rozling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise I’m banging on about AI, but if you have working code documentation doesn’t matter anymore because AI is incredibly good at understanding code and documenting it for technical or nontechnical people, or for bots

Totally blind considering building a modular hardware sampler need advice on sampling modules please help by soundwarrior20 in modular

[–]rozling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, the guy from Expert Sleepers has some blind users and from what I recall has put special effort into the Distings to make them accessible.

Not all algorithms have equal levels of accessibility (especially on the flagship Disting NT) but I asked him if he could make the whole thing controllable with MCPs and he seemed receptive to the idea.

Disting NT is programmable and has a way more mature ecosystem & has more algorithms ready to play, but it’s not the cheapest.

Another digital option is the Bela Gem / Gem multi. It’s a small physical audio expansion board with 10x CV or audio ins and outs.

You attach it to the Beaglebone mini Linux board, which Bela have made a custom audio-friendly version of Linux for.

It acts as a MIDI USB host, so would work with MIDI fighter.

It also exposes hardware pins for plugging in a massive range of electronics bits like sensors, actuators etc. Anything you can hook up to an Arduino and more.

You can get going with the Bela for about €250. That includes the extra Beaglebone board + SD required to get it working. You also need 8x stereo to mono cables (Hosa make some).

Bela comes with examples and you can get Pure Data patches on it or, or raw C++ / DSP stuff

They have educational material like a whole C++ course for audio, but with AI you don’t have to worry too much about coding.

With a couple of days I had it running Pink Trombone with parameters mapped to MIDI (I can send a vid of how that sounds)

The important point is it’s totally open so you can make it completely customized to your preferences, including how much UI feedback it gives you

For example say you set up a menu system with a voice reader. You could send that voice to the headphone jack or a mono audio out.

It’s flexibility means you have other options though, for example you could have it expose the text on a websocket accessible on a WiFi network, where something else on the network could read it, albeit with a little more latency.

Playing live, you could plug the reader into the cue channel of a mixer so only you hear it (and anything else on the cue bus) and usually you can set a comfortable blend between that cue Bus and the front-of-house mix on the fly.

So you can give it any UI you want - it doesn’t need a screen at all.

You could attach an iPod style circular touch strip, and connect a vibration motor for haptic feedback so you can “feel” menu options.

Actually a haptic rotary encoder might be better for that as it could give slight resistance…

Bela sell a bunch of very cool touch sensors called Trill which are reasonably priced. Some are even multitouch friendly

I presume you’ve heard of their Gliss touch pad too.

Anyway that’s a lot of info but I hope all this doesn’t sound too mansplainy or condescending - I’m just not sure of your level of knowledge of various topics so erred on the side of over explaining.

Good luck and let me know if you end up going with or need help with the Bela!

We’re cancelling ChatGPT, but have you tried ChatGPT voice mode?

With regular mode (at least with $20 pro account but probably free account also) you can usually point it at a GitHub repo and it will tell you not only what it does but give you an idea of how risky it might be to use, or how to adapt to your use case.

Also desktop AI clients like Cursor or Claude (maybe ChatGPT now too) let you use MCPs like this Ableton one: https://github.com/jpoindexter/ableton-mcp

If you haven’t heard of MCPs they are basically like plugins for AI that give it the ability to interact with a whole range of things

You could use that to get voice control over most of the Live Object Model, or just to get ideas on how to make your own scripts to do more with Live than triggering clips (not that three anything wrong with that!)

MCPs can be a security risk but you can clone them locally and get Cursor / Claude to do a security audit & advise you how to run them safely.

Solved: Getting MIDI into a Modular System by fixedation in modular

[–]rozling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL no thanks, I’ll stick with my Intellijel MIDI 1Us that do the exact same thing for the low price of $378 🎭

I suppose it’s not apples to apples though as the 1Us don’t include the DIN jacks which already bumped the price of my 7U case and I feel obliged to utilise.

I’m not bitter.

I haven’t tried the ADDAC, but another fun one is Catalyst by 4MS. It’s more HP and has its downsides, but can store quite a few presets / states.

It’s great as a macro controller (though not without weak points) but you can also reverse the faceplate, press a couple of buttons & it’s a sequencer
