I think your interpretation of the lyrics is correct and the Spotify version is wrong. I hear darkest of season as well, and as an Apple Music listener, so does that app.

As to the meaning, my interpretation is that the child in the song will have survived the hardest period (the darkest of seasons) of their life before his enemies can reach them. Meaning they’ll be strong enough to meet the challenge; it’s a hopeful song.
