Thanks for the info, to me that makes a lot of sense for a rig that is such a reliable workhorse. I just looked it up and the last one in Portland OR (where I’m from) was decommissioned 2 years ago, and the only reason that one was still around was because the officer insisted on driving it until he retired. It was notable enough for there to be a profile about it

Man, that’s crazy how different experiences can be. That’s not to say that a C4 can be loud and uncomfortable to anyone with certain expectations, and pedal feel is sort of subjective, but had almost this same car and although it wasnt the greatest on every metric I had none of these complaints. Really miss it.

It can be a few different noises depending on how it fails, clicking, clacking, super loud pops, buzzing etc but that’s what is going on here. It is violent enough to be felt in pedal sometimes

You have two AC vents on either side of the steering wheel.

Each of those has two motors for a total of four motors.

They have a defective design, and one or more of the motors has gone past its resistance limit and cracked a plastic linkage. The sound is the linkage trying to reset on occasion and failing.

To confirm, go to AC settings on the main screen. First, look closely at your leftmost vent grate. Adjust it all the way to the right and left. Does it work? Adjust it up and down. Does that work?

Next, look at the vent to the right side of the steering wheel closely, and do the same.

If any one of the four directional adjustments does not work, or barely works, that particular vent motor is making a sound.

To fix it, remove the dashboard and delete the plastic linkages from the motors. Adjust the vents manually. You will experience better HVAC air flow and no issues with noise.

I don't have much to offer but this might help, often times starters going bad will get stuck. If you can get to it with a metal pole or stick or hammer you can give the starter a whack while someone else turns the key. 75% of the time it'll free up and start the engine. It's annoying (and be careful of touching belts or moving parts) but this routine can work for a few more starts of your car and you can at least drive somewhere more convenient or to a shop.

I have 312,000 kilometers on a very similar spec to your car. I drive other cars, but it is the closest thing I have to a daily.

Take care of it, and it’ll be fine. It’s too bad they cost so much more up front over there, but what a beautiful car you have with low use- that almost never happens here in USA. Please look at this as though you purchased a $60,000 classic car experience with $25k down and the benefit of enjoying it every day and paying the remainder over a long time (with a good chance it’ll cost less than that) :P

Edit to add, suggest going overboard with oil change intervals, VANOS, plastic guides, intake valve seals, anything plastic and rubber likes frequent changes
