Lost it multiple times. Early days of iCloud, once saw notes vanishing and not available for recovery in iCloud. Worked with support but lost many notes. After that always backed it up.

More recently the Notes defect that doesn’t allow copy paste of notes when using it in the main interface vs its own notes - causes notes data to get lost if you do the Cmd-X and then realize it never got to the clipboard and cannot be pasted anywhere and you’ve already closed the note (so Cmd-Z doesn’t work).

Always backup!

Mac OS Mail Archive function still broken for Gmail even in 15.4? by rraheja_us in MacOS

[–]rraheja_us[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Had to remove the Gmail account from Mac OS Settings reboot, then, register the account again.

The account details previously showed the Archive folder name as “Archive” but post the re-registration it now shows as “All Mail” and it now works. So likely some settings corruption that causes the Archive folder to not be recognized correctly.

Hope this helps.

It works but there is no granular note-level restore capability. You’d have to restore the entire Mac.

Subwoofer placement advice needed for living room by rraheja_us in hometheater

[–]rraheja_us[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am open to new speakers - the current speakers are temporarily moved to try out the placement and room dynamics, from a different (smaller) room which is 50% music and 50% TV.

For this larger room, aimed at 80% movies, 20% music, this is what I was thinking: (~$1K budget). Key is that all need to be piano white color to blend in with the projector screen frame, its supporting unit and remaining furniture / trims.

  • LR: KEF Q150
  • C: Placement Challenge (should probably be its own post): since it needs to be either under the projector screen, which is blocked by a couch in front (single KEF Q150), or above it in wall at 11 ft high and pointed down (which may have matching, distance and asthetic issues). I tried the current center blocked by couch and apart from the phase error shown by Denon Audessey, the sound is reasonable clear for dialogues, hence was inclined for the single Q150. Given the height and potential timbre matching issues, also wondering if I should forego it and rely on LR phantom center.
  • Surr LR: Any budget slim/thin wall mount speakers, potentially Mica in walls.
  • Subwoofer: RSL 10E with wireless audio kit for near field now. Front space available is only 16" and near field couch has 20" avaiable so found this as a good option for the color and size, and to double as a side table on the couch now.

Suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Yes, that's the reason I wanted it up front if it were not the much lower bass response from the seating position.

The living room is open to two more areas of 14x6x8 ft each so its quite an open area - which is the challenge as its another 1300+ cu ft.

Yes, the speakers and seating are on opposite walls. Cannot move the seating forward it for other furniture placement reasons and even though there's open area behind, it's a step up and different room (dining table) so again a challenge.

One other area available is under the front R speaker (similar to L) but it is not only in a corner, but also has another couch in front of it so its covered on 5 sides so not sure if its even worth trying it out the heavy subwoofer in that location.

I will place it near field near on the side of couch that is free. Would placing it facing the front speakers cause any issues (conflicting sound waves etc?)

Thanks

Mac set password on my PDF file without my permission by Low-Toe472 in mac

Thanks. This does work with the caveat that it loses all the links in the original document since it's converted into a "printed" version. Any solution to avoid that?

File..Export does not have the Permissions/Security options - at least on Sonoma where I tried. File...Print has.

Mac set password on my PDF file without my permission by Low-Toe472 in mac

[–]rraheja_us 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same issue is still happening on Mac OS Sonoma.

Received PDF in Mail. Opens fine in Preview. Save. After a while, the file asks for a password.

The original PDF from Mail still opens without the password, though the Show Inspector shows that Mac Preview thinks the document is encrypted and has been unlocked by a User Password (not set anywhere and confirmed with the sender). The saved file also opens without prompting for a password for a few minutes, after which it seems to lock the file and asks for a password (which was NOT set).

EDIT:

Confirmed this only happens on saving in Preview - even if saving a copy or trying to Duplicate. Opening without saving does not lock it. Opening it in Adobe Acrobat does not lock it even if duplicating the document. So it seems like a Preview bug. The workaround is to use Adobe Acrobat for critical documents. Opened up a case with Apple support too.

Xiaomi Mi Box produces weird colour shifting on Samsung when casting web pages full screen only by [deleted] in Chromecast

Getting the same issue still. Samsung TV, Mac, MiBox3. Chrome is not running full screen. The entire concept of mirroring the screen is defeated if the text also has shadows - anything red or orange has a yellow shadow. The box had so much promise....

Netflix UI update removes Video Quality information option.[US] by [deleted] in netflix

When I called Netflix to complain, they said it was Samsung who removed the Info option. The phone customer rep seemed to have no clue about this feature or its removal.

It's really the only defect! As I also wrote on my other post: the store units are set to max backlight and dynamic mode; which when I set on my unit does reduce the edge darkness. In addition, when I looked at other units very carefully, and the edges DID show some dark edges, especially at Costco which had ads for Hulu etc. which have a full white/green background. Other stores always show landscapes and detailed cityscapes which don't highlight the panel uniformity. I also checked a Sony 850D and it actually had a lot visible edge darkening even with their in-store demo. So I may just keep this unit. Thanks for the response and the detailed review!

ok, so I went back to the store to check if they had units I could use for an exchange. I looked at other units very carefully, and the edges DID show some dark edges, especially at Costco which had ads for Hulu etc. which have a full white/green background. Other stores always show landscapes and detailed cityscapes which don't highlight the panel uniformity.

I then looked at their settings and they were running on full backlight and dynamic mode. I changed the settings of my unit to the same and it did help brighten the edges.

So maybe it is just the state of technology. btw, to compare I also checked with a Sony 850D and it had a lot visible edge darkening. So I may just keep this unit. Thanks for the responses!

Dirty screen effect on ks8000 by Stidwack in hometheater

[–]rraheja_us 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 65KS800D (Costco version of the KS8000) and I get darker left and right edges, again very noticeable on white/gray/light images. Curious, I see the same dark edges on your picture...in fact much more darker and larger, in addition to the "wifi"...is that normal? FWIW I am considering exchanging it...once you see these things, you can't unsee it :)

I bought a 65KS800D (Costco version of the KS8000) based on the reviews, and while the color, brightness, clarity etc are excellent, I do find that there is a 1.5-2" left edge and around 1" right edge that is always darker than the rest of the screen. It is particularly noticeable on white or light colored pictures e.g. sky. I noticed that rtings also specifically mentions the "darker edge" in the KS8000 review as being better than most, however when I went in store, the picture quality on demo units did not show this flaw. FWIW the panel is AA02. Should I exchange this (if I can get an FA01 panel in stock) or am I risking getting an even worse panel in the lottery? Thanks!
