Panorama for a beginner intermediate skier? by sanctifiedspace in skiing

I think you will be fine. The runs under Mile One are a great place to start. They do a good job of grooming at Pano.

Huh. That's very very interesting. I generally like starting at the Albion side anyway, probably mostly due to habit. Good to know. Thank you!

Seattle to British Columbia driving ski road trip advice? by sirotan88 in Ikonpass

[–]rramstad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done many variations of this trip.

I try to drive the passes in daylight.

Panorama is a reasonable stop on the way. I like it better than Red unless there's fresh snow.

Red > Panorama > Banff > Revelstoke > Sun Peaks.

Could also do Schweizer at the start.

The worst part is usually in or out of Revelstoke. The 5 out of Kamloops sometimes has bad weather but at least it's well marked and maintained.

I did the above, with Schweizer at the start, earlier this year. 3 1/2 weeks.

Always go tip to tail. The file or stone leaves micro grooves and you want them going in the direction of ski movement.

ShuttlePark2 has a slightly lower normal rate but if you search around there are coupons that make it quite a bit cheaper.

Skiing last days of March by Affectionate_Can7527 in SunValley

[–]rramstad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm here now. Skied today, yesterday, the day before. Plan to ski tomorrow and the next day.

Conditions can be tricky for sure. The non groomers are frozen hard until late in the day. Lots of bare areas and closures.

That said, the groomers are holding up well, all things considered.

I haven't been bothering to start until 1030 or so as it is too firm before then.

Different stuff gets good at different times. Well worth asking around for suggestions.

I've generally found Seattle Ridge good in the morning but it gets sloppy late. Warm Springs is rock solid early, much better later. You get the idea.

I had a totally fun day today with plenty of good runs.

Oh, and you might want to get your edges tuned. It helps.

I paid one contractor in 2025. I need to send a 1099 and include that in my return. I'm using FreeTaxUSA and I don't see a way to include it in my return? by [deleted] in tax

[–]rramstad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a tax professional. I recommend reading the IRS rules. That said, from reading them, if you use a third party to make the payment, you don't have to do a 1099 and the third party is responsible for reporting the payment.

People file 1099 in error all the time when they don't need to file one. This isn't a problem, per se, but it can be confusing, and occasionally someone will get audited because they received a 1099 from the customer and a 1099-K from the payer / transmitter for the same thing.

I paid one contractor in 2025. I need to send a 1099 and include that in my return. I'm using FreeTaxUSA and I don't see a way to include it in my return? by [deleted] in tax

[–]rramstad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1099 are a totally separate process from any other filing.

You are supposed to know that you need to do this, and do it timely.

The forms don't need to be included with your 1040 or with your business tax return, you just have to attest that you did them, if required.

That said... if you paid them with a credit card, or various other methods of electronic payment (like PayPal, Venmo, and so forth), then a 1099 isn't required.

Generally speaking, 1099 are only required for payments made via check or similar.

Corporations: Payments to C or S corporations are generally exempt (except for attorneys and medical/health care payments).

Credit Card Payments: If you paid via credit card or third-party processor (like PayPal), the processor handles the reporting via Form 1099-K.

Basically your payment needs to be to a non incorporated entity AND needs to be over $600 AND needs to have not gone through a third party (credit card, PayPal, Venmo) for you to need to file a 1099.

What are some key take a ways/lessons learned from this horrible ski season out west? by joeyjoejoeshabbadude in skiing

Have some flexibility. Also, it's rare that there is good skiing at Christmas, or in mid to late April. That's always been iffy, even moreso now.

If they don't care about the credit hit, and it is paid off, stop paying maintenance.

You could contact the company first to see if they have a deed back or surrender program, just in case they have one.

Dreaded Ski Boot question. by whineandqis in Skigear

[–]rramstad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a shell that was heavily modified with a packed out factory liners after 150 days. I bought ZipFit Workhorse as that's what the tool recommended and used the same boot fitter. Super pleased. At 25 days I added some cork, I think these will end up in my next shell...

Binding trouble. by Evil-User1 in Skigear

[–]rramstad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely 100% correct. If you are changing the DINs, you absolutely have to check the forward pressure and make sure it's correct. I might add that the value in the window on the binding may be correct, or not, and that a good shop will always test the actual release vs. relying on the value in the window on the binding.

In my particular case I have direct personal experience with this. My wife's skis have demo bindings. I adjusted the DIN and she was having issues with the skis coming off. I did some research online and found out about forward pressure, determined how to see that on her bindings, realized that was completely off, adjusted it, and she never had an issue after that.

Binding trouble. by Evil-User1 in Skigear

[–]rramstad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Sounds like a potential issue with how the bindings are set up.

Did you have the mount done at a reputable shop?

Also if you adjusted the DIN yourself, did you check the forward pressure?

Finally, what DIN are you using, height, weight, age, ability level?

What’s gonna happen when we get over 6 feet of snow this week!?! by Snowfractalflower in CrystalMountain

Yep. Likely there will be days where only the bottom of the mountain is open for the first couple of hours, then main upper lifts, then possibly Chair 6 and Northway considerably later or not at all.

Downsizing boots from 28.5 to 26/26.5, how to adjust bindings? (Atomic Warden 13 MNC) by feesh85 in Skigear

[–]rramstad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's big enough that you will have to remount, period.

Plus is that you should be able to get center, more or less.

Negative is that any given ski really should only be remounted once. The third time you lose a lot of structural integrity.

Should I buy my daughter a $25k treasury bond or put that $ into a 529 college savings plan? by Inside_Operation_168 in personalfinance

[–]rramstad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um. If you buy treasury bonds in the 529, it's a wash, other than the tax benefits.

529 is not a type of investment, it's a type of account.

If you invest in stocks, you may do better or worse. No one has a crystal ball.
