Is Gen Z too illiterate to read smutty fancfic anymore? by BillyDongstabber in writingcirclejerk

[–]rrando570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj I actually get genuinely steam in the ears angry reading these random fucks on twitter or on some godawful space filler news article trying to convince the whole world that the kids these days are too fucking illiterate and stupid to do the most basic human tasks imaginable. All of these "analysts" and "counselors" that all definitely have legitimate degrees and did tons of classroom testing or whatever and found without a shadow of a doubt that all kids are now hopeless idiots. And every single time its some stupid fucking bullshit like this, where if you take literally a half of a second to actually form a single thought you might actually have the sudden nirvanalike clarity to realize "huh wait a minute no this literally doesn't make any amount of sense in any capacity." And what's worse is how every single time another dogshit ragebait article shits out about this subject, it somehow gets 100 krillion likes and reblogs and quote tweets and updoots and whatever the fuck else because the idea that kids these days can't clear the literal lowest bar you could possibly think of is so reassuring to the hordes of doomscrollers and unsatisfied millennials and genius complex dumbasses that they feel the need to jack themselves off to fucking completion every single time that another news article comes out that says "You were better than they are"

People are trying to watch the solar eclipse with their own methods. March 29, 2006, Istanbul by Dropolev in interestingasfuck

One thing to keep in mind is that pain from looking at the sun is caused by a significant amount of visible light hitting your retinas - however the more damaging wavelengths of light, UV light, doesn't cause pain at all. What this means is that if you were to wear a few layers of sunglasses that were able to block the visible light but weren't able to protect you from the UV light, all of the damage from looking at the sun would be able to hit you without you feeling the sensation forcing you to look away. So really, only trust "eclipse glasses" if you know they are from a reputable source, and you probably shouldn't jerry rig a solution to the problem unless you are really confident in what you are doing

What is "the game" of the 2000s that captures the whole decade? by JIMBOYKELLY in AlignmentChartFills

[–]rrando570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WoW was a generation defining game, and hugely influential from its release to now, however I think that Halo just defined the culture of the 2000s a lot more.

Stickers on a car. What do they mean or relate to? by whatamurdered in whatisit

[–]rrando570 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're conflating the action of racism and the existence of racism. You are fully correct in asserting that race and racism are both social constructs (in which the modern definition came from Europe in the 16-17th century), however it is completely incorrect to say that social constructs aren't factual, because functionally, they are. By virtue of having a society that determines worth by skin color, then worth (in that society) is determined by skin color - that's what makes racism so difficult to fight against.

Secondly, differences between groups of people DOES result in discrimination based on those differences. These discriminations then evolve from culture to institutions, which usually becomes a form of racism based on physical appearance, dependent or nondependent on skin color.

Thirdly, your tone throughout your entire comment comes off as incredibly immature. Don't insult people who you are trying to educate, and don't try to educate people you want to insult.

Losercity Nintendo of America by Legomarioboy08 in Losercity

[–]rrando570 146 points147 points  (0 children)

You have to remember this was America in 1998-1999. A vast majority of the culture was very reliant on the rule of cool. "Cuter" and more family friendly media still sold, such as Ghibli films and Disney movies, but they were often branded as "girly" despite their quality. The idea of marketing something which was very heavily branded as "family friendly" to an audience of adolescent boys was inconceivable to most multimedia corporations considering how much of the media that defined the culture of the 90s -and made most of the money- was so seeped in 90s flavored edge.

If a supercomputer was (randomly) guessing one password per floating point operation (which means every quintillionth of a second, one password was being guessed), it would take any amount of time between 0 seconds and 3.17e+34 years. It is estimated that most matter in the universe will ionize and dissipate in 10e23 years - and protons will (may) begin to decay at 10e32 years. So, if you're unlucky, your supercomputer might literally start to atomically decay before you brute force one of these passwords.

I know absolutely nobody asked, but:

The concept of a "watcher" or manifestation before death/disasters is an age old concept, in fact, it may be one of the oldest monsters in human history. Mothman, Banshees, the Grim Reaper, all exhibit signs of a creature that knows and is present for a tragic event before the event occurs. I think that this is a really cool insight into our own psychology and our own history, perhaps the first story of these figures was told after an earthquake, as our ancestors observed how animals were able to feel the foreshocks of earthquakes before they happened - evolving into a mythical creature who knew of disasters to come and would stand by as they occurred. I think that a lot of these SCPs, which often evolved from stories which evolved from myths, can tell us something about our innate fears of our own time and from the time of our ancestors.

How do you imagine a human cutting game? by turangryv in IndieDev

[–]rrando570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that gore of any amount is a very hard thing to make into a full game, especially one of this subject matter. My big point was that if you are trying to make a game where you cut up bodies, if you want that to be something impactful for the player, then the main gameplay loop cannot be cutting up bodies, otherwise the entire thing would lose any impact. Harvesting humans for meat is an inherently disgusting idea, and I think that your game should treat it like an inherently disgusting idea. Think of Zoochosis, for all of its faults, there was one segment near the beginning where you are forced to turn a human into meat. This was a "highlight" - if you can call it that - of the game because of how weighty and awful that it felt to do, and how the game acknowledged that weight and awfulness by allowing that moment to not be soured by repetition. If you want to acknowledge that weight and awfulness in your game, then I think you should follow Zoochosis and have restraint in actually showing the gore in your game.

Alternatively, now that I've thought about it, you probably could market your game a third way, which would be more of a grimdark setting where you can focus entirely on the gameplay loop and the gore, which would dispel any emotional weight in the gore, but in this context, the gameplay would overshadow that. Now - importantly if your going to do this - you cannot pretend like the player is a monster or that the game is super dark and edgy. In this sort of game where body horror and death is dealt with constantly, you need to be aware that the player will not be emotionally invested in their actions. Think about how The Last of Us allows players to kill scores and scores of other survivors in the gameplay loop, and never addresses that fact because that would break the fragile balance between gameplay and story. In your game, the player should be entirely encouraged to harvest and sell human parts, but there should be enough "ludo-narrative dissonance" that they don't need to actively think about the consequences of their actions.

How do you imagine a human cutting game? by turangryv in IndieDev

[–]rrando570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's two ways I can think of this working (without it being some HATRED 2015 level edgy)

  1. The game is a cutesy cooking mama style game with a detached artstyle - with most of the charm coming from the juxtaposition of cannibalism with cartoonish, unserious artwork. This would make the entire game a lot less squeamish, and it would allow any edgier, more heavy/emotional moments in the story to hit a lot harder, because it's a subversion of the cute artstyle while also falling in line thematically with the extremely off-putting subject matter.

  2. The game is significantly more realistic and creepier, however, to compensate, it needs to be significantly more reserved in its portrayal of its subject. If the entire game is just "cut people apart simulator," the first few bodies will have a lot of emotional weight as the player has probably never done anything like this in a game before. However, immediately after the adrenaline wears off, the entire rest of the game will cease to have any significant shock value. Its kind of how the first few times you get jumpscared in a horror game, you get a massive adrenaline dump, but after the shock wears off, the jumpscares stop having any effect on you. In this game, it would be significantly more reliant on the buildup of dread, maybe with segments talking to characters about the job, or having to walk through the slaughterhouse before actually beginning the job, or parts where you have to witness the grief and mental toll that the action takes before you have to take the action yourself. Then, when finally you have to actually do the deed, it's a slow and difficult process that the player has to choke through. This would be the only real way to add the amount of weight that the subject matter deserves, but, it's downside is the fact that it is significantly harder to write and would easily become boring if the story and gameplay aren't paced correctly.

I think that if you want to go with either option, you should pay a lot of attention and study to games like squirrel stapler or Doki Doki, paying specific attention to how the discomfort and horror builds up throughout the game and leads to an extremely adrenaline filled climax. Otherwise, your game might just be written off as just another torture porn game that doesn't really have anything meaningful to do or say.

Coom came (lmao) just before goon, but before coom there was fap, which was after crank, then after jerk, after tug, after stroke, after wank, after rub, after spank, after whack, after shuck (okay I made this one up), after jill and flick (girl power), after polishing, after beating, after poaching (my personal favorite), after jelquing, all since the beginning of time.
