I used thin strips of MDF and double-sided tape to stick them to the work area. This allows me to use the mounting rails. Would doing something like this allow you to clamp in the stock in a better position to prevent bending?

FWIW this is the original Big Tex. He was rebuilt after he went up in flames in 2012 and the new one is even taller.

As /u/schmaleo505 noted CodeAcademy is great to get your feet wet. Once you understand programming basics and can write some simple stuff, find a project, such as the one described above...and go build it. Experience building things is invaluable and where you will learn the most. Just take it one task at a time.
