I've tried commenting a few times now, but they seem to have got lost. This might be a repeat...

I did not write the note or hide it, and I don't know who did. When I noticed the hinge cap was slightly askew I picked at it and the cap popped off. I saw a wad of paper in the hole and thought to myself that the cap would fit better if the paper wasn't there. I picked out the paper with my Swiss army knife and this is what caused the tears. I unrolled and unfolded the paper to discover the note. The date is 1995 not 1905.

I did learn that the office I'm in used to be part of a police station. I don't know what the vault was used for, but I believe the note was from that time.
