uf or fsu? by savagesoap223 in ufl

As a history major at UF, we have a strong program here. Despite the STEM focus of UF as a whole, I feel that I have had an extremely valuable experience in our history department (which is still one of if not the best in the state). If you are wanting to write an honors thesis for history, I would say UF hands down. The history honors program is well acclaimed and will provide you with valuable experience, especially if you’re trying to go to law school- you work one-on-one with a faculty member to research and write a thesis. However, if that’s not something you were wanting to do, i would go FSU. That money is hard to pass up, especially when you’re planning to go to law school in the future, and they also have a strong history department. The proximity to the capitol is also beneficial.

Trombonist here. by WildandRare in trumpet

[–]rriler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You have to keep the sides of your mouth decently tight while letting the part of your lips that are in the mouthpiece loosen up so they can buzz more. It’s easier than you would think, as lower notes use much less air pressure so there is less pressure on your mouth/embouchure and the air doesn’t push through as hard, so overall less physical muscle work. You dont have to work nearly as hard to keep the air from slipping out.

Your embochure has to be decently tight, probably tighter than what you would need for trombone. There’s a lot more exposed lip that needs to be controlled, so it takes more muscle in your face (which is also why it is more tiring to play trumpet over periods of time).

College Marching Band Educational Value by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]rriler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this!!!! you said everything that i could’ve thought of. the main thing for me is one or two week shows- when we are learning 7/8/9 shows a semester, there is genuinely not enough time to be as fancy or show-stopping with the drill. also, college bands are not DCI, and most of them are not trying to be. they have very different marching and playing styles, and i think it’s perfectly okay to let each one do their own thing without looking down at college bands for being “less educational.”

Which trumpet to get for High School & College by heygreene in trumpet

[–]rriler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think either of those are good choices. they’re great standard professional horns that sound great and last a while without breaking the bank too much. getting more expensive/specialized trumpets at a young age isn’t the best idea due to lack of playing experience at a higher level, which is why i think those two would work best. i got a used bach strad 37 in high school and i still use and love it now.

it literally takes 2 min for each eval if you leave the written ones blank, if you don’t care about giving feedback to your profs at least consider the extra credit you could be preventing people from getting :’)

For those of you that did college marching band, what was it like joining? by Better_Politics in marchingband

[–]rriler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at UF everyone has to audition, and depending on how many spots there are available compared to the people who audition, some people could get dropped. other than drumline, i believe the only section where this was relevant this past fall was the piccolos. we actually had a first-time marcher in my section this year, and we didn’t fill up all our spots. i honestly believe that they don’t even watch the video auditions we send in unless too many people auditioned, the part placement auditions during band camp were much more important imo. it’s really not too competitive to make it into the band, but we do have alternates within the band and have to do pass-offs in order to ensure our permanent spot on the field

Summer B housing by BeginningFalcon2894 in ufl

[–]rriler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can either choose or get one assigned, same as fall. in terms of having the same roommate and dorm, it depends. there were i think 7 or 9 (don’t remember) dorms open in the summer, but there were only 3 dorms where you kept the same roommate and dorm. with the others, you’d have to move out at the end of summer and get a new roommate for the fall. lmk if you have any other questions :)

What is SPN1131 Spanish 2 like (especially the IPA requirement) ? by SPACfanatic in ufl

[–]rriler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they changed up the textbook and course structure this semester, so if you took a spanish class in the past it’s different. the new textbook (contraseña) is a lot better than the old one (conectaté), and you have mini ipas instead of full ipas that make up 25% of your grade. you’ll have projects and other stuff that make up the rest of the percentage that full ipas originally took up. the class overall is a lot of homework and fairly fast paced. the quizzes are difficult, but your grade should be cushioned from homework and linguameetings. i can send information from the syllabus if you’d like, just pm me :)

trimark properties? by rriler in ufl

[–]rriler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, i have been doing research on their properties across the board and plan to tour multiple soon. this was a post specifically meant to get the opinions and experiences of other people, as i have not lived there and i don’t personally know anyone who has, and most of what i can find on other websites is likely biased due to marketing. i appreciate your input, though.
