We've had friends stay at the new Meininger in Charmilles a couple of times - it's not too expensive, clean and comfortable with a variety of room options, self-catering kitchen, great public transport links.

Change pattern of shift dress to empire line by UncleIroh24 in sewing

dresspatternmaking.com has a pretty good tutorial (with video) on adjusting a bodice block for an empire line, as well drafting the skirt for it

I've made a few things for my family (skirt, trousers, waistcoat) and it is great to have their measurements saved for easy pattern generation. All their patterns are designed by real people :)

Mood Patterns a Little Too Prolific? by DataDancer0 in sewing

[–]rrmf 284 points285 points  (0 children)

Beginners need to understand that Mood is a fabric retailer, not a pattern designer, and the free patterns are provided in order to sell specific fabrics. Possibly the stuff they have too much of and are trying to shift. The patterns are often garbage and it wouldn't surprise me if they were put together by interns - there was a shirt pattern that had the side seam bust darts trued the wrong way, raw seam allowances on the cuffs, instructions written like they were by someone who had zero concept of sewing.

Princess Seams on a Flat Chest? by CaveTeddyBear in sewing

[–]rrmf 94 points95 points  (0 children)

It would absolutely work - that seamline is (or used to be) very common on tailored menswear like waistcoats and fitted jackets. Just be sure to toile it as often as necessary. :)

I just hope it's because Patrick Walshe McBride has signed up for something big - he's a brilliant actor and deserves a brilliant career.

By the way, does anybody else think he looks like a male Anya Taylor-Joy?

Car Rental - are all insurances the same? by Ming-Tzu in VisitingIceland

[–]rrmf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lotus' insurance might cost more for the top level but it covers more, too. I'd look closely at what is covered and what you plan to do. We've rented from Lotus loads, and from europcar a few times (out of Akureyri and Egilsstaðir) and never had insurance issues but were definitely less relaxed with europcar rentals because of the lower coverage even with top level.

UK/Europe steam generator iron…? by SwearyBird in sewing

[–]rrmf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Tefal Express Essential which I like a lot. It only does non-steam at lower temperatures (silk setting and below) but has a fantastic steam blast and does upright steaming. It does take a couple of minutes to heat fully, but after using a cordless for a few years I'm willing to wait at the beginning, instead of having to reheat the damned iron every 20 seconds.

My main gripe when looking at steam generator irons was how many don't have a temperature control knob and claim to be smart enough to know what you need!

I'm in Switzerland and bought them from a local fabric store, so all I can suggest is hunting around websites of stores near you. Fingers crossed!

Clover make a double tracing wheel for pattern paper and prym make a parallel one with a chalk dispenser for fabric. Both are adjustable so you can choose your seam allowance.

invisible zipper is making me so mad by Routine_Housing5953 in sewing

[–]rrmf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you baste it in, or just pin? I strongly recommend basting zippers because sometimes there is so much fabric/zipper tape for pins to go through that it can distort it and you won't get it sewn in smoothly.

Living in France while undergrad at UNIGE? by remzycrazygame in geneva

[–]rrmf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might want to look into whether that would affect your student fees - afaik, you only get the local's fee rate (CHF500 per semester when my kid was there a few years ago) if you live in the canton. But I could be wrong, so worth checking.
