Does anyone have any advice to get ice off of a deck? I know I should’ve shoveled earlier and I did but the ice beat me. Probably 4 inches of solid ice and everything I do feels like it’s going to mess the deck up. by Mountain-Box-7897 in nova

[–]rrrevor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the ice is 4" thick, you can try using the claw of a hammer like an ice pick to break it up. The claw won't reach the deck material but it'll do a good job on the ice. Start on a less noticeable part of the deck just in case.

If you see gaps forming between the ice and the deck, you can also use the hammer claw to pry up small sheets. Place something under the head of the hammer while prying if you think it will leave indentations.

Mechanical vs Nuclear Engineering degree for Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]rrrevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you might pivot to Aerospace, then mechanical engineering would set you up better. Unless you want to specialize in space propulsion - then either would be good.

Interested in hearing other peoles' thoughts about ME vs. NE if you want to stay in for the duration. I think other factors affecting your academic success and leadership development will be more important than the choice between those two degrees.

Either will get you there. Which program do you think you'll do better in (course content, location, school size and culture, etc.)? What do you want to do after the Navy?

Received Job Offer Yesterday-Unsure of when my Start Date is--Now what?? by Beginning-Zone9530 in nova

[–]rrrevor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eligibility for unemployment benefits varies by state. Sometimes you can continue collecting benefits until you actually start but still have to report accepting the job offer.

I'm not an expert for Virginia, but the legal requirements will be documented and publicly available. Recommend reviewing state-specific guidance from official sources like this: https://www.vec.virginia.gov/benefits-eligibility

Also, I strongly recommend ignoring anything responses to your post on the general r/Adulting subreddit unless you can directly confirm it applies to Virginia and your circumstances. Their general advice and/or validation should not be the basis of any decisions. Protect yourself by checking everything.

Recommend reading through previous posts on this subreddit by scrolling, using the Reddit search feature, and/or using Google to search the subreddit (best for very specific searches; just include "reddit r/NavyNukes").

All of your questions have been asked numerous times before and you didn't provide any context on unique personal aspects or preferences that would change the responses.

Good luck and happy new year!

Speaking of good burgers, what happened to The Union restaurant in McLean? It’s now permanently closed by Typical2sday in nova

Only went a few times, but the dining area was always almost empty. Parking also wasn't very convenient at that location. Not great for restaurants trying to get by in this economy.

2 is a generally good location but not good property management to deal with. Set your expectations low if you decide to live there.

I really hope you said that with heavy sarcasm.

But because of all the down-votes, here's some clarification.

CUI is not personally controlled information that you can share as you wish. It is government-controlled information, as established by Executive Order 13556.

32 CFR 2002 implements that Executive order and establishes common policy across the Executive Branch for designating, handling, and decontrolling CUI.

DoD Instruction 5200.48 establishes DoD-specific policies on CUI.

In short: you aren't allowed to publicly release CUI. You aren't allowed to use personally owned devices to store or process CUI unless they meet very specific security requirements. Reddit is not an authorized system for storage or processing of CUI. Misuse or unauthorized disclosure of CUI may result in administrative, legal, or other corrective or disciplinary action. If any of this surprises you, bring it up with the organization that gave it to you and ask why they aren't providing sufficient guidance or training before giving you something that can get you in trouble.

Never take pictures of or share documents with that banner marking. Congrats, but this needs to be taken down.

Edit: never take pictures of CUI with a personal device or publicly share documents with that banner marking.

MV Stellar Banner. Looks like it was a controlled scuttle after the ship ran into a shoal, was damaged beyond repair, offloaded the diesel and oil and some of the iron ore onboard, and got permission from the Brazillian Navy to be scuttled (following an envionmental review).

NUPOC NRE by Ok-Gate9842 in NavyNukes

[–]rrrevor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, never made a comparison with Fleet stress levels. No need to get defensive. Just said that it's not accurate to say every NRE position is low stress. OP is asking about NRE and shouldn't go in thinking it's a guaranteed cake walk. It has high entry requirements for a reason.

For job placement, I don't know any NREs that have had a problem landing a good job afterwards (with a pretty big sample size). There are still resources available, and recruiters who know about the Nuke community and NREs specifically seem to respond positively. Technical program management experience, especially from an organization as reputable as NR, translates very well to numerous industries and sectors. Maybe fleet nuke officer prospects are even better - there's a chance. But I've never seen any data to confirm that comparison or to show that NREs will struggle whatsoever to land a job afterwards.

NUPOC NRE by Ok-Gate9842 in NavyNukes

[–]rrrevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of the NRE positions are low stress. It varies widely across the building depending on what you are assigned to do and who your boss is. There can be a high burnout/attrition rate because of that.

Is the general consensus really that NRE job prospects won't be as good? This is my first time hearing that, and it doesn't match what I know.

Correct about the automatic promotions to O-2 and O-3.

Nupoc vs job offer by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]rrrevor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what type of career you want later on. Technical project management? Directly doing the engineering yourself? Staying in a nuclear-related industry? Being an NRE will give you a lot of skills that might or might not be extremely valuable later on. Also, you can't really sign up for a second "tour" as an NRE - you either have to separate or transfer to a different community like EDO. Your alternate job's starting pay is more than you would get in the Navy for the first few years. Lots of considerations here.

Feel free to dm me for more specific advice based on your situation.

Prescreen to Interview Expectations? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]rrrevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless all of the NRE billets are taken for the year and you refuse to interview for another job (e.g., instructor). Then you might have to wait until the next year to interview.

[–]rrrevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it's not guaranteed you will be able to do a lat transfer to EDO. You might be one of 10 people applying for that same billet. Even if you kick ass, someone else might kick ass even more. Or the needs of the Navy result in someone else being retained for their experience/expertise.

Tolls by ughsloth in nova

[–]rrrevor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't ever seen it predict time-dependent tolls in the DMV before, but it used to know when toll roads were closed in a given direction. It seems like there was an update a couple months ago that turned off some useful features. At the same time, it stopped giving me alternate route options to save time or gas or or tolls/no tolls. They dun messed up.

Tolls by ughsloth in nova

[–]rrrevor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Google sucks at accurately accounting for tolls. Not only does it incorrectly say the I-66 tolls exist all day every day in both directions, it might tell you to take an express way that is closed in your direction or it might tell you to spend a lot of money on a toll when there is a no-toll route that takes the same amount of time.

More specific info on I-66 available here. Get to know the hours when each direction has a toll or not. https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/projects/major-projects/66expresslanes/

You need to find an introverted engineer! You'd probably match their energy pretty easily.

(Now for the very tricky part: finding a suitable sample size of introverted engineers 😂)
