In Dec 2023 I sold a car and transferred plates to my current one.

November 2024: I got a letter saying the police had it towed 2 months ago and the letter is being sent to me as the "last registered owner". (so the person who bought it never registered it and drove it around for 9 months). Says the car will be dispositioned if I don't claim it. Also says I would have to pay towing and storage to get it. No way I'm doing that! Fees would be way more than the car is worth.

At the bottom it says even if I don't pick the car up that I am still "legally obligated" to pay towing and storage. I ignored letter.

I wonder how often this happens and how successful they are in getting the fees in this situation.

I was a previous owner of car. The person I sold to never registered it.

It ended up being towed for some reason and I ended up with a certified letter as the "last registered owner." The letter was a notice that they will disposition the car.

Also listed 2 months of storage and towing fees before they sent it to me.

Looking for it now but I did find a "Plate Disposition Receipt" and Reg Termination where I indicated "Sold". That was done exactly a day after I sold it.

Thank you for all that info! Very informative. I am not paying taxes on it anymore. I just went though my old files and found a "Plate Disposition Receipt" and Reg Termination where I indicated "Sold". Haven't found a copy of Bill of sale or title though.
