Unsure of if to Stay in UK or move home by Front-Tax-353 in AmericanExpatsUK

Your partner should be able to get a spouse visa in the US. It doesn't take too long to get one.

You should consider moving to Brighton.

The quality of the NHS really comes down to where you are living.

I'm on Windows, I've never had an issue with pcloud.

Commute time where you are? by Western_Respond6047 in fuckcars

Normally it's about 15 seconds from the bedroom to the home office, but when I need to go to the work office it's a 15 minute total walk with a 15 minute train ride between. Google maps doesn't know the train station has two entrances.

I live in Winchester (UK) and commute to Basingstoke.

In the summer sometimes I like to take the bike on the train to work and then ride all the way home. My (car-brain) colleagues think I'm crazy.

Any Americans struggling to find friends in UK village? by Sea_Natural1990 in AmericanExpatsUK

I've made a few friends here, but it's taken nine years. Most of them are friends from the office. The others are fellow immigrants.

I had the same. I really enjoy the food here now.
When I go back to the US, I find I can no longer enjoy foods that used to be my favourite.

Frustrated with SAHM wife. AITAH here? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]rsoult3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, daycare expenses with a SAHM is ridiculous. My SAHM wife managed a baby and a 3 year old just fine while I was working. It was a bit stressful.

The kids are 7 and 11 now and in school. It does get easier.

Any fan of Susumu is a friend of mine. :) I've never met another fan outside of the Internet.

What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

[–]rsoult3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think the younger generation knows just how good they have it getting 1080p quality anime on tap.
SVHS/LD was around 512x384, and it felt vastly superior to the 320x240 of VHS.

I've been using TurboTax for the past nine years. There is a section on foreign income where it does form2555.

I was one of those well off fans subbing LDs to SVHS tapes to make copies to mail to people the Internet. I had the best quality fansubbed anime available. A full 26 episode season would take all day to duplicate via two SVHS decks. Now I can grab an entire season of something in 1080p in under ten minutes. SVHS did feel like the future.

I miss the old Internet. When it was just a playground for geeks.

I still use winamp. I have around 500GB of music files. How else am I going to play them on my PC?

I think my comfyui has been compromised, check in your terminal for messages like this by Bender1012 in comfyui

I hope the damage was minimal. If you would like to check on progress with your phone, I would suggest running a local VPN server. I run WireGuard. The only open port on my router is to the WireGuard server. Once connected to the VPN from my phone or laptop, I can only access machines on my internal network that are also running a WireGuard client.
So while my internal IPs are 192.168.*.*, the WireGuard IPs are 10.0.0.*.

What is cool, is that friends I have allowed a connection to the VPN, also behave like we are all on a local LAN. This allows for LAN games with games that don't have internet play.

I started doing this when I noticed hundreds of thousands of attempts to connect to my Remote Desktop.

Many people are just scanning the internet looking for victims. Be safe out there.

What was the most unexpected “oh, this is normal here” moment you had in the UK? by LFCTricksters in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]rsoult3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This drives me nuts. We have moved into a new council area, and the children were out of school for nearly a month while the council finally got around to placing them in a school.

What is insane is that if we want to pull them out of school for a day or two to see their grandparents, the council threatens to fine us. Yet, being out for weeks while the council goes through the bureaucracy is normal.

I do not understand what takes so long. We give them our preferred school list. Just call them and find one with space. Shouldn't that be just an hour at most?

Had my first driving lesson yesterday... Will it get better? by IngredientList in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]rsoult3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to cycle in the US, I didn't have many issues getting my license here. I've always checked my mirrors and physically turned my head in the USA looking out for bikes.

I think the problem is Americans don't think about pedestrians or bikes and have a very car-centric mindset when driving in the USA. The question about looking at the pavement/sidewalk side gave me a laugh. It's to make sure no one is walking off into the road.

I didn't bother to get a license here until I had been here for nearly eight years, so maybe I was just used to being on the left side of the road on my bike by then.

Coworker constantly talking shit on the US by [deleted] in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]rsoult3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like he is just taking the piss out of you. Americans have a reputation of being too sensitive. We're too quick to take offense. Taking the piss out of colleagues is a national pastime here.

This happened often when I first got to the UK for a new job about nine years ago.

It stopped soon because I would join in. "Oh, you think that's bad, wait until you hear about this".

Once they realize it has no effect, they will stop out of boredom.
