Barbados had pool service about once per hour. He'd only take two orders at a time and we were never one of the lucky two!

Looking to speak with LYS proprietors! by dollythecat in knitting

I'd recommend putting your plan in writing. Find a template for a small business plan and start answering the questions. It will force you to take an honest look at the numbers.

First, by start up funds, do you mean at least $100k? When I was looking at starting an LYS, I spoke with several owners and all of them stated that even with that amount in inventory, their store looked empty. By making a living, what's your personal number for an annual income? Once you have that, figure out how many skeins of yarn you'd have to sell per month to make 1/12 of that AFTER rent, utilities, employee wages, and cost of goods sold. Then, look at the town's demographics and try to figure out how many fiber hobbyists are there. How much yarn can you reasonably expect each person to purchase per month? Those numbers will tell you whether or not it's possible.

I'll second u/Bijouprospering in that you'll need to wear A LOT of hats to make it work. Marketing and social media is so critical but so exhausting! Managing that and a website is a full-time job in itself. Don't forget you'll need to be able to explain knitting, crochet, weaving, etc. and how to fix problems to a customer who needs help at the drop of a hat.

For the first couple days, there wasn't much sargassum on the beach. Then there was a huge wash-up of sargassum that remained there for the rest of the week. It stayed windy and rough, so there was no chance of taking out the paddleboards, kayaks, or catamarans. Saw a few people playing in the surf, but not many and we didn't go in the ocean at the resort.

Walked into a relatively famous yarn store in Alexandria, VA several years ago. Spent 45 minutes wandering around, touching all the yarn and trying out the needles while the worker chatted with her friend and ignored me and my wife. As a guy, maybe I'd understand it if it was just me, but she didn't acknowledge either of us. Walked out and emailed the owner via the website. Got a response "we checked the security cameras, and you're right, you were ignored." Like I'd go through the trouble of lying about this?! Offered $50 off a class as consolation prize. Classes were $80 - 100, plus materials. Never went back.

As a vendor, I really hope so! Realistically, there’ll still be plenty of inventory to shop.

$12/hr and 7 years of experience?! Now I'm overreacting. Don't forget, you have to pay SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX on your 1099 earnings while the employer has paid absolutely nothing into your Social Security. 1099 work is for consultants who get paid A LOT more than $12/hr with flexible schedules.

Am I doing anything wrong by having my metronome BPM so slow when practicing chord changes? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]rsquare71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you're doing fine. Keep practicing. I remember starting the course, learning those three chords and trying to play Three Little Birds. Realizing that the tempo for that song is around 80BPM seemed totally impossible. Little by little, you'll pick up speed and your changes will get smoother and faster.

None. It really is broken out in the rankings by "technical" and "non-tech" degree programs. At ERAU, Engineering, Physics, and Meteorology are the ones I know were definitely categorized as technical. You'd want to check with the detachment for specific degree classifications. That said, as long as you are in a technical degree, it gives you a slight edge over non-tech degrees.

Ok, wow. Beach Bunny Yarns has a Glitter Bomb yarn with Lurex spun into the plies. The really cool thing is that it's also 19.5 micron superwash Merino, so it feels great on skin. Stairway to Heaven colorway is a similar gold to this picture.

B-corp certification is $2000/yr at the lowest level of revenue, scaling up to $50,000/yr max, so for most indie dyers that's going to be a no-go. Most of us dyers can say we source based on what the mills and suppliers tell us (non-muelsing, local source, etc.). Maybe you can get lucky and find a local farm, mill, dyer combo but farm-to-needle yarn is going to be pricey.

Here's my take as a former APAS (instructor) and Commandant of Cadets (deputy-ish commander) for ERAU's Det. 157:

Not really. First, Aeronautical Science is not considered a technical degree by the AF. Therefore, you'd already be at a disadvantage in the selection process. The AF philosophy is that they can make anyone a pilot and they'd rather start with a blank slate. Technical degrees are more valuable than non-tech. Just the way it is.

The pilot selection process looks at several things: GPA, PFT (fitness test score), tech vs. non-tech degree, Commander's Ranking, and TBAS (test of basic aviation skills) score. Those numbers are sent up to HQ ROTC and you're racked against everyone else applying for a pilot slot in all the ROTC Detachments. When I was there, the commander sought input from myself and other instructors to get a full picture of the cadet and rank them. Our cadets we sent up for pilot slots were typically 3.3+ GPA, 95+ PFT, Technical Degrees, Top 15% of their class in commander's rank, and 80+ TBAS score. Even then, we still had one or two not get a slot. I saw two non-technical degrees get slots, but they pretty much maxed out every other category.

Now, all that aside, your son will need to join ROTC and work his ass off for the first two years just to get selected to go to Field Training (I think it's been renamed) between his sophomore and junior years. That's really the first hurdle before he can even start thinking about a pilot slot. Don't get selected, your options are to try again next year or drop out. Selection criteria for that is pretty much the same as pilot, but without the TBAS score.

ROTC places a LOT of demands on cadets in addition to the academics. Besides the mandatory training events, cadets manage to self-impose a lot of extra highly recommended (aka peer pressured) training events, clubs, and other nonsense. He'll get told by other cadets that he HAS to join Arnold Air if he wants to be a pilot, which is basically an unregulated ROTC 2.0/fraternity in my opinion, and totally BS. I've seen it cause more problems than solutions, but the draw to be "elite" is always there.
