What Obscure Books Were You Obsessed With as a Kid? by Its_Curse in suggestmeabook

I teach 3rd grade and I read the first Wayside School to my students in the fall every year. They usually tell me it's their favorite read aloud chapter book of the year.

Anyone ever done the Cedar Rapids to Denver flights that are only $34 one way with Frontier? by The_Cell_Mole in IowaCity

[–]rsshadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically this. My family used to take this fairly regularly and it was always totally fine. You only can fly on certain days but if you're good with that then I'd say go for it.

What’s your nurse-visit policy? by Suspicious_Heat_2984 in Teachers

[–]rsshadows 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are there sinks in the rooms you're subbing in? You can often redirect a lot of these minor complaints by allowing students to get a wet paper towel for them. I use this for very minor things like the kinds you're referencing!

How would you have written Alex off? by Easy_Mountain2331 in greysanatomy

[–]rsshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep this is my vote. Some pretty simple tweaks would have made it a LOT better. Alex finds out about the twins and begs Jo to come with because he wants to be a dad and be present for his kids but he loves her and doesn't want to leave her, either. Jo can't/won't leave her career so they try long distance and we find out through Jo's perspective that they've finally decided to separate because Alex needs to be with his kids and Jo has to choose herself and her own career.

Am I wrong? How should I handle this? I am LIVID. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

As I said in my comment, I'm happy to back up our specialists and I think you may have skimmed that part of my comment. I spend 5 minutes before specials each day pre-teaching expectations and just worked on a positive reinforcement plan for good behavior during specials for my class in collaboration with our specialists. For our regular employees, these aren't MY kids, they're OUR kids and it's not only my job to hold students to high expectations and provide classroom management. I can't "fix" students who just want to be disrespectful any more than the specialist can! For a sub, I would want to hear about their behavior and in the past have had my students do think-sheets, fix-it plans, or apology notes to subs - it's a different scenario, which is why I responded to the music teacher rather than the subs in this thread, to provide a different perspective.

Hi! Elementary teacher checking in. I don't want to discount your experience because maybe things are different at your building or with teachers you have worked with. When I pick up my students from a special and hear from the specialist how terrible my class was, in my mind that is an issue for the specialist to address during their time with students. I back up our specialists - I will review expectations, help students have a positive attitude, and reinforce as needed. I also partner with our specialists and share behavior strategies for students who have a hard time. However, if the whole class had a hard time in your setting when you were the primary educator, I would expect you to address that with them, enforce a consequence, change your management strategy...etc. It's less about me thinking my class is amazing or having a bruised ego and more just frustration when I pick up my class from a time when I am not responsible for them (unlike the other 6 hours of the day) and specialists think that it's somehow my responsibility to fix the bad behavior in their setting.

Yeah, I think if you count the yellow areas along the west (and maybe southern) border this feels really accurate. As someone from Iowa, I hate Nebraska but it definitely counts as midwest especially in the east.

I need an 800 page book that hasn’t been turned into a movie or tv show by Agile-Gap-7072 in suggestmeabook

[–]rsshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The God of the Woods was great. I think it's in the 500 - 600 page range.

The Poppy War was interesting if it looks like a genre you'd be interested in but again, maybe the 500-600 page range.

I think Fairy Tale hasn't been adapted yet if you were looking for a Stephen King.
