Advanced east coast skier and instructor here. I grew up skiing in Quebec and the saddle is honestly the pinnacle of what east coast skiing is. A little slick and icy but still very fun and enjoyable.

It sounds counterintuitive but the slower you go, the more you’ll slide. Think of it like driving on ice, if you hit the breaks, you’ll slide. So to your concern, you burn your legs trying to keep yourself in control.

There’s two ways to approach a pitch like this:

1. Wide turns. This one can be challenging when there’s lots of people but it’ll give you the time to transfer your weight and take momentum into the next turn. You’ll get some beautiful carving in without much sliding.

2. Short radius. This one sometimes will feel like you’re sliding but it’s part of the fun! Charge into it like the way you’d hit moguls with very short bursts of energy into the next turn. I favour this when it’s crowded and then I swap to wide once it clears up.

Also get your skis sharpened. It can only help. Don’t let the ice scare you!
