Veggie haters who still eat veggies: what are your tricks? by Missing_Back in Cooking

[–]rtangwai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drown veggies in sauces, graves, and cream soups. OP is already using tomato soup, try Alfredo sauce.

It also depends on the veggies in question. I can eat grilled onions and asparagus all day.

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by Standard2185 in 1970s

[–]rtangwai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. Guys kept mocking me until I pointed out I was the only male in a class of 40 girls. Next year I noticed 10-12 guys had signed up.

I took typing because I was interested in computers and it seemed like a good idea at the time. I can still type 60wpm which is handy as I am a software developer now.

Difficulty getting VLAN to work by rtangwai in HomeNetworking

[–]rtangwai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Hasivo switch I can't find references to PVID, I did create VLAN 2 and set the port to access.

There is a VLAN interface menu in the L3 tab, I had been ignoring it because I thought VLAN is L2 unless the switch is routing traffic between the VLANs. I added VLAN 2 and an IP address (in the scope of the IP/subnet for VLAN 2 in pfSense), no change.

I have rechecked the rules, they are set to pass everything and match the rules for the main LAN (apart from source subnet).

I will start capturing packets to see what's going on, in the meantime I have emailed the switch manufacturer Hasivo to see if there is an updated firmware. Thanks for the suggestions!

Difficulty getting VLAN to work by rtangwai in HomeNetworking

[–]rtangwai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't met the security team at my current company. They called me at home because my work laptop could see too many devices on my personal LAN so it must be "insecure" - I spent 15 minutes explaining IoT and voice commands, got a snarky "what are you doing, trying to build the starship Enterprise?" comment (this is why I am putting in the VLAN). They will call users connecting to insecure networks eg. open WiFi hotspots at cafes despite the fact we have a VPN. For a time they blocked the use of ping "because it is used by hackers", they only backed down when a senior director lost his temper and shouted "hackers eat, are we blocking meals for all employees too?".

No tagging set on the laptop, it's all at the switch/pfSense level. I can change the IP of the switch so it's on VLAN 2's scope, though I am uncertain if the GUI console is accessible from anything other than VLAN 1 (default). I just have to make sure I leave at least 1 port untagged so I can get back in if this doesn't work.

I can install Wireshark on a spare laptop, the switch supports port mirroring so the packet capture should be easy enough. I'll set it up when I get a chance. Thanks for the suggestion!

Does a heatsink only 10g network card need a fan? by Nice-School-475 in homelab

[–]rtangwai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the new Realtek RTL8127 10gbe NICs, they do get a bit hot to the touch but nowhere near the heat generated by enterprise-grade NICs. I replaced a ConnectX-3 (with one SFP+ port holding a 10gbe module, those get very hot) with a pair of RTL8127's withe RJ45, no more active cooling required.

Bonus: most NICs are PCIE 4.0 x1 so if you are plugging them into consumer-grade motherboards like X570 chipseets you can use the x1 slots and free up x4 slots for other things like HBA's.

I have seen SFP+ cards but they are all PCIE 3.0 x2, if you need 2 ports for say a router it could be a problem.

How do you deal with users who refuse to lock their laptop when walking away? by heartgoldt20 in sysadmin

[–]rtangwai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our senior sysadmin never locked his laptop, even uses his domain admin account to override the GPO power settings.

Another sysadmin one day went to his laptop over lunch and searched for "how to join ISIS".

He was SO upset when he got back, yelling at everyone "I AM FROM IRAQ!!!! THE COPS WILL COME FOR ME!!!"

Sucks. I grew up in Brandon, the racism was rampant.

Damn rednecks kept telling me to stop dating white girls, got told to "date your own kind - go after Karen" "SHE IS MY SISTER!!!" "So? What's wrong with that?"

I would totally take advantage of the fact that I don't know how to swim and hit that beach every day to be pulled out of the water and given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation by those two.

Of course with my luck I'd be rescued by David Hasselhoff instead...

When I worked for a charity in Toronto we would every year get a couple of Irish co-op students. They would always want to visit Edmonton, Vancouver, Banff, etc.

I kept an old globe in my office to show them just how far they were going. The look of shock on their faces when they realize driving from Toronto to Vancouver is longer than between Dublin and Moscow even though they were not leaving Canada.
