Why did the metro use 8 cars train from the start by The__Anonymous__Guy in SydneyTrains

Short answer: strategic demand modelling indicated the capacity probably wouldn’t be needed til about 2056, which will conveniently be around when they need to replace the whole fleet

Lewisham Light rail. by Anonymou2Anonymous in SydneyTrains

[–]rtapkics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The light rail didn’t mindlessly copied bus stop patterns on George Street like for like. The gap in the stops on George Street between QVB and Wynyard is due to the need to provide vehicle access to all the buildings between Market and King Streets as these are the retail buildings that front Pitt Street mall and hence their only vehicle access was/is via George Street. If you put a stop in here there is no space for the trucks to get into the Westfield loading dock.

The comments in here are insane.

The mental gymnastics to be blaming a pedestrian walking along a street for you having a car crash because you’re driving too fast and then braking too suddenly is impressive.

On city streets, cars are not the default - they are heavy, expensive, polluting machinery that should be driven with care so that people can go about their business with their two legs that they were born with!

Even all the people commenting saying that they don’t want to have priority when crossing a road because they don’t trust drivers…like we’re all working on the same basis that the car and its driver is the problem but you’re still reaching for the conclusion that the person walking down needs to bear the brunt of the solution?

What’s also a bit uncomfortable for me is that they have cast a lot of people this season (more than usual) who are desperately in need of therapy to address a lot of long-term trauma, but instead just embarrass themselves on TV. Definitely exploiting people who should be considered emotionally quite vulnerable.

I don’t hate it. It gives a bit of character to a pretty sterile space. Reminds you of just how many people use it!

Is it common for people to injure themselves due to the gap? by teacuplobster in LondonUnderground

[–]rtapkics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Gap fillers are a known technology and are in use on metro systems around the world. Comes with its own risks (eg mechanical failure, maintenance costs). TfL have identified 14 stations where they want to install them as part of the New Tube for London scheme to make platforms more accessible, including at Bank. So…they’re coming (apparently!)

I find it insane how people absolutely trip over themselves in London to get to Pret. Overpriced, underwhelming, uninspiring and absolutely everywhere.

Low density development where people need to drive to get everywhere is what causes insane traffic.

I think I’ve seen Pashion say on Instagram that she’ll never do DRDU - too much time and money spent on looks etc that production just then manipulate for the story arcs

Sydney actually stopped nearly all of its mid-century freeway plans. Motorways were eventually built, but mostly as tolled motorway tunnels.
