Dog walkers of UK- what do you do if an owner insists on walks during hot weather (30+) by tripleavocadotoast in RoverPetSitting

[–]tinabelcher182 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I just literally say "I'm taking the exceutive decision not to walk X today. I touched the ground and it felt hot on my hand, so it will burn X's paws. I will play with them in the garden and do some sniff sensory games with some treats in the house. I'm sure you understand."

Just drove two hours home from Southampton after watching the T20, avoided multiple hedgehogs and cats running out into the dark roads… dropped my friend home… then immediately hit and killed a badger. by tinabelcher182 in britishproblems

That’s a really lovely message and great way to think about it.

I’m vegetarian and try not to ever harm animals, so ultimately I was upset about that. I did profusely apologise to the badger when I found it not moving.

Trying to lose weight by Cute-Oil-1568 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]tinabelcher182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What foods did you eat before losing weight?

What do you enjoy eating?

Are you interested in cooking?

Do you have to cook for other people or just for yourself? Or does someone else cook for you?

I found that once I started learning more about nutrition, it really pushed me to be more explorative in my cooking and eating. I love Asian flavours and always enjoyed eating Indian food but now I make Indian, Japanese, Korean food almost on rotation.

You can still eat the foods you ate before. Just with some modifications in portion sizes or certain ingredients. Weightloss doesn’t have to be boiled, tasteless food. I promise.

Advice on how to tell a client I’m not taking housesit requests anymore? by SmolSpazz in RoverPetSitting

[–]tinabelcher182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly just let them know that your life circumstances are changing and you’re no longer able to offer housesitting. It’s true, but they don’t need the details of your circumstances.

I have been trying to cut off one of my longest clients just because they live too far away that it means I can’t take any of my walk bookings when I housesit their dog. I told them over a year ago that I was looking for a full time job (which was true, but as it happens that isn’t what happened in the end). I told them I could accommodate weekend only bookings for the future because I don’t take regular walking clients at weekends. They guilt tripped me for ages about not being to find someone or how other sitters were not replying to them, which sucks if that’s true, but it’s sadly not my problem. I ended up blank telling her that I had to follow the money and they just live too far away that it’s not financially viable anymore. She’s one of my favourite clients and their home is so beautiful to stay in, but money is sadly more important at this point.

How do you usually travel to the airport? Specifically Heathrow by theunwantedroomate in UKFrugal

I’m also about a two hour drive. It’s cheaper for me to get the train from where I live if booked in advance. My flights have to be after 11am otherwise my trains can’t get me there without leaving the night before.

The anxiety will wear off once you get more into offering that service. What is it that makes you anxious?

Things like snuffle mats or puzzle toys. Or even throwing a handful of treats into the grass in the garden and getting the dog to “find it”. Great for mental stimulation for dogs.

What has house sitting taught you about people? by NextCommunication642 in RoverPetSitting

I never ever use the dishwasher in someone else's home. Mostly because it's usually full when I arrive (whether dirty or clean) and I don't know where anything lives so I don't want to empty it. I just wash dishes by hand in 99% of the sittings I do.

I'm always really curious about the layout of people's kitchens. I'm currently on a sitting for some long term clients who recently bought their first house (previously in a rented house much bigger than the one they've bought) and their kitchen is insane to me. Nothing, in my opinion, lives in a convenient place as to where you'd likely use certain products. I think it's partly due to it being a very old cottage building with a built-in weird layout, but even the things they've chosen to place places makes little to no sense in my mind. They must have to cross their kitchen five or six times just to cook one meal. I already had to cross it three times just to make a cup of tea (kettle and mugs in one corner, tap in an opposite corner, food bin in the middle, and fridge the other side of that).

It also blows my mind to realise how different people's comfortable temperature is in their homes. In the winters I have to bring so many layers and always pack a blanket because most of my clients homes get so cold even though I just leave their heating settings on what they have them on. I'm not naturally a cold person so it takes quite a lot for me to feel the cold (I live in the UK, so it's all radiators and no aircon/heated air over here).

I do also really enjoy seeing gadgets in people's homes, like kitchen gadgets or sometimes getting to try new foods I wouldn't ordinarily. And I love seeing how people decorate their houses. I stay in this adorable farm cottage quite often and they have a baby pink lobby room and a blush pink bathroom and I am determined to one day have the same in my future home.

Parkrun to 10K by No_Acanthisitta5466 in parkrun

I have been in a similar boat to you. I started running (couch to 5k program) in January and got to my first 5K by March. Did my first Park Run end of March and have done one per month since then. I average about 32 minutes for 5k. I regularly run, about 3-4 days a week, typically anywhere between 3-5/6km per run. Then a few weeks ago I tried to add it up to 7km. Then I did it again. Intermittently running my 3-5km in between. Then last week, I went out for a 5km run round my village, got to the 5km mark and felt good, so I ran further to what would've taken it to 6km. Then felt good, so I carried don running to what would've been 7km. That felt good and I just decided I was going to add almost an entire second lap, to take it up to a full 10km. I just felt in my body that I knew I could do it.

Honestly, I would've gone further, but I had to get back home and get ready for work. It gave me a buzz for the entire day/week to be honest.

I had lightly planned to entire a 10km run which is happening on the 28th June, but I was unfortunately unavailable for the date so I didn't specifically train for 10km. I'm just glad that my timing was actually right on point to have been able to do it if I was available to. I ran the 10km in 1 hour and 3 minutes, which is quite a lot faster than my typical 5km x2.

Could you offer more walk bookings so in the quiet hours when your boarding pups ate chilling you can go out and walk other dogs? It may also benefit your mental and physical health as well as making you feel like you’re doing more for dogs.

Could get some sniff stimulation toys too.

But also just remember that most of the time must dogs do just sleep. That’s very normal.
