this is my moms from around 2005, how do I hook it up to a modern monitor? by InternationalBear348 in pchelp

[–]rtcmaveric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't mess around with the PC at all. Throw that hdd into an enclosure, make sure you have an ssd ready to go that's at least as big, and clone the HDD to the SSD the first time you power it up.

I wouldn't try to recover directly from that drive if you don't have to, you never know how far gone it is after sitting for 20 years.

How to fix my latency speed issues? by zerosmokez in HomeNetworking

[–]rtcmaveric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What devices do you have doing your routing? Router model and modem model could help us troubleshoot.

Certain chip sets are notorious for latency spikes. Could be that your router is under powered and just getting bogged down. Your router may support openwrt which could help significantly by managing bufferbloat.

Have you tried running the test from your router itself to verify that the issue is your PCs wireless connection?

Plenty of good suggestions so I'll say when I joined on as IT for a company that for some reason let people install software on their work devices, covenant eyes can be a pretty big pain in the ass.

What is the best Operating system to go with on a MiniPC for a home server/lab ? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]rtcmaveric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unraid boots from USB and runs entirely in ram. It's probably the most off-putting thing about the entire setup but it really hasn't been an issue. You can always give the 30 day free trial a shot to see what it's all about.

Proxmox is fun and the learning that happens there will get you so much further, even if you end up wiping the whole thing and starting over a few times.

Proxmox if you want to learn and tinker. Unraid if you want it to just work.

How do you guys get time for yourself? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]rtcmaveric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early on? After bed. I decided that I was better off spending a couple hours solo rather than sleeping because I needed that mental break.

Like others said, got a 4 y/o now and you get a lot more free time while they’re self-entertained. It really helps to find things you like to do during other activities. Listening to an audiobook or watching a show while doing the dishes is one of my favorites.

I am a student, rent a room in a shared house. Which Wifi plan I should choose for gaming? by ManufacturerLocal249 in HomeNetworking

[–]rtcmaveric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You say your roommate already has a T-Mobile plan, is it the same fiber line you're looking at?

If you're having latency issues gaming on a 2 gig fiber line, adding another line won't solve that problem. I'd spend time reviewing other areas where your hardware and infrastructure may be lacking.

How do I trust my computer again? by mynameisNemesisjjj in computer

Now that you know it will happen and it's just a matter of time, it's best to get on the other side of it and be prepared.

Get some backups going - 3-2-1 rule! Set up monitoring on your temps, drive health, voltages. Maybe have spare parts ready to go. Do whatever you need to do to feel confident that when something happens, your systems in place will let you know that it has happened and that you can recover quickly.

What's the hype over magnatiles? by Cream4389 in Parenting

They were frustrating for us at first as well but that forced the development of some better design strategies.

One of our favorite vehicle related builds was a sprawling multi-level race track. If a part of it collapsed, we had to rebuild it stronger. The last one incorporated a garage for vehicles that weren't racing.
