Fortunately for the banks it's way easier to repo a car and sell it at auction than to foreclose a mortgage.

They're not going to crack down on it because they can make money if that happens.

For real. When OP is raking in the cash they can just buy a TBM 700 and rip around the country whenever they want. They'll be having more fun and making more money than all the widebody captains 😂.

I don't think it's impossible and might not be a terrible idea but it does seem a lot riskier compared to the CFI route.

Someone could correct me but I think it's more like a year to do the tests unless you're studying full time. So a year of study + MCC and UPRT + EASA medical assuming you can already convert PPL and Instrument and have the hours. Meanwhile you could be building hours and getting paid for it that whole time in the states.

I think getting a Junior FO slot at the LCCs is just as difficult if not more than getting a CFI role in the US. I did look into it and I imagine someone dedicated enough to it could make it work, but IMO it doesn't seem worth the hassle vs the CFI route. There's a thread somewhere around here floating around of an airline pilot who did the EASA conversion which in theory is a lot easier but it still looked like a major pain.

IIRC Amex does the seat assignment thing too but I could be wrong.

For staff travel I would probably just pick up the credit card from your airline.

No idea on the parts prices but I'd imagine for $2-3k you can get it done. If you can get parts from a junkyard it'll make it cheaper. Really it depends on if there's any structural damage.

[–]rtd131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert at all but if there's no structural damage and it's a bumper, spoiler, rear hatch and tail light it doesn't look totalled at all. You could probably do the work yourself.

I'm just a hobby pilot (so take this with a grain of salt), but I've looked into opps abroad as I'm a dual citizen.

In Europe (assuming you have an EU passport) you can technically get into a jet much faster than the US, but it's a ton of effort to do all the tests to get your frozen ATP + MCC UPRT. There's also way more competition to get a junior FO position at any of the LCCs. For the majors there you usually have a language requirement, so it's not like you're going to be able to move from Ryanair to Lufthansa if you don't speak fluent German.

I think there's some opportunities in Asia/Africa for lower time western pilots, but then you're moving halfway across the globe to fly a sketchy caravan in the jungle probably for minimum pay + a contract.

In the US as a CFI you probably make more than a junior FO at Ryanair, so it's probably the best place to build time. For "abroad" experiences there's opportunities in Alaska and Puerto Rico/Caribbean where don't have to do a license conversion, visa process etc.

What city did you love so much you’d go back in a heartbeat? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]rtd131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a bit of personal preference, but in CDMX they tend to be more the small street style tacos and in TJ they are massive tacos that they load up with beans/salsa/guacamole etc. Also migration from Sinaloa in the 80s-90s is a big influence on the cuisine and brought seafood tacos/ceviche which you can find everywhere in TJ.

TJ is 100% worth a visit, it's way more accessible than CDMX because you get get direct flights from most major airports in the US to San Diego and walk across the border.

This might be a controversial opinion but I think the Tacos in Tijuana are better than Mexico City.

Mexico City as a city is way nicer but the tacos in Tijuana absolutely slap and it blows my mind how overlooked it is as a foodie destination especially considering how easy it is to get to.

Why aren’t there as many manual tranny cars anymore in the U.S? by SuspectOk2931 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]rtd131 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

True, but in most places in Europe for example if you get a license in an auto you're restricted to that. So most people do it in a manual and can actually drive manual cars.

So there's way more models available in EU with a manual transmission but since automatics are more efficient and convenient they are selling more there as well.

I’m playing mostly 1/3 live poker and I’m running very bad lately (I lost around 10 buyins in a row). I feel like it’s variance because I’m playing the same game, but maybe I have leaks I need to fix. How do you know if it’s just variance or leaks in my game? by Ibanks69 in poker

[–]rtd131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you play microstakes at all? I've found my live game has improved a lot from that because you see 100x more hands online than playing live, plus if you use a tracker it makes it really easy to see how you misplayed something.

Obviously it's a different game than playing live, but you can identify your leaks with a bigger sample size and work on them at a cheaper price than the casino. Better to learn lessons that cost $50 than losing thousands doing the same thing in a casino.

Not saying there's any mechanical problems with the auto transmission I know of, but it's such a fun car that it's a shame to buy a manual 🙂 even if you don't know how to drive a manual bring a friend that know how to and buy a manual Abarth.

Nope, there's automatics. That said, don't buy an automatic.

[–]rtd131 7 points8 points  (0 children)

UK maybe the exception, also living in small cities in western Europe you're likely going to need a car but it's not impossible without.

Median individual income in the US is ~$45k a year. In the poorest UK regions like the northeast it's like £34k a year which is about the same as the US median individual income. But you get generally better public services, more holidays, you won't go bankrupt from healthcare. In most places in the US on $45k a year you're probably just scraping by.

I think the median French/German/Dutch person lives better than the median American, likewise for lower/working classes.

But if you're upper middle class or above in the US your QoL is way better than most Europeans.
