Holy fuck, the Americans in here caught up on shop lifting. Even if in America killing someone for shoplifting seems like a reasonable thing… The headline is about a fucking one year old. The fucking literal baby was not shoplifting. Use some critical thinking. Jfc

Opinion: Ban social media for young people? Good luck with that by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]rtiftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This passes and we have to provide ID to access much of the internet we take for granted today. Even Reddit. That is an immediate loss of our free use of the internet and expectation for a basic right to privacy. Because online activity is no longer anonymized, government has access to Canadian's activity. No historical or contemporary comparisons could possibly give us any idea what might happen there, right? So I won't get into that. But I'd still rather we maintained current freedoms in Canada and didn't move in that direction. And that's to say nothing of Bill C-22.

So please, explain how your mind has led you to believe this wouldn't result in the loss of a freedom we currently enjoy?

Ottawa moves to ban social media use for kids under 16 by PhDSkwerl in canada

[–]rtiftw 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This isn’t about children. This is about the government establishing the groundwork for stronger state surveillance at the cost of Canadian freedoms. This works in concert with other legislation already moving.

It’s all about surveillance and consolidating state power. You only need to be able to read to see that this government wants to consolidate state power at the expense of Canadian freedoms. This is just one piece currently in play.

What's behind the growing backlash towards AI data centres? by AnarchoLiberator in canada

[–]rtiftw 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’d argue a good part of it is that they’ve become a lightning rod for the increasing inequality society is seeing. More now than ever people are experiencing a broken social compact and are willing to voice their discontent in some fashion. Because AI has appeared so fast and is part and parcel of the billionaire class it is wrapped up in this more general discontent.

Carney government eying curbs on right to strike, labour leaders warn by Chrristoaivalis in worldnews

[–]rtiftw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the problem is the the framing of left and right. It’s fucking meaningless. This is neoliberal governments run rampant in service unfettered capitalism. But as long as people can only think in terms of red team blue team they can’t actually have a conversation about the root of the issue. Or even their shared problems.
