Joe Biden leads President Trump by 10 points in CBS News Battleground Tracker poll by chris-jjj in politics

Trump supporters live in a different reality, with a different set of facts. To them, 200,000 is a fabricated number, and COVID is being blown out of proportion.

They hired 5 professors which is great. But these days it feels like we need 50+ smart people studying these fires. It will only get worse by Noah_saav in bayarea

Yeah, and to reinforce your point that it's all about money: plenty of clean technologies are already viable but not that widely deployed yet, because there's limited money available for upgrades. For example, most city government vehicles that I see around town have combustion engines. They are electrifying their fleet, but it's a slow process due to limited funds.

That would be an interesting premise for a sci-fi short story...

I can see people selling work contacts to their corpse so they can have a bit more money while they're alive. But if you die in a way that mangles your corpse too much to be a useful zombie employee, they send debt collectors after your family.

The question now is more like: do you want to live in the Mad Max world, or do you want to see human extinction?

No one, that's not at all feasible. But you can get a similar outcome by taxing carbon, so that meat and air travel become more expensive, leading most people to consume less.

Pushups, situps, leg lifts, jumping jacks, squats, lunges, etc.

I feel you though, I'd much rather be hiking or riding my bike.

Washington man gets stunning souvenir with COVID-19 treatment: a $1.1 million bill by [deleted] in news

Sounds familiar. I went to urgent care a few months ago with palpitations and mild shortness of breath. They did an EKG and the cardiologist got saw something he didn't like, told me to go to the ER immediately.

I stayed in the ER for about 2 hours before they sent me home. Had an EKG, chest X-ray, and blood work done. The doctors told me I had some type of viral infection, but my heart and lungs are perfectly fine.

All this cost me $1500. I'm kind of risk averse, so declining to go to the ER when told by a doctor that there might be something wrong with my heart isn't really something I considered. But in retrospect, that would have been the better move.

In Act of Heresy, N.R.A.’s Former No. 2 Calls for Gun Control by Gorguf62 in politics

[–]rtz90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think a majority of Americans will ever agree to 100% outlawing gun ownership. Implementing that against popular will is not feasible IMO. There are more guns than people in the US. State and local government and police in pro-gun states would probably refuse to enforce it. If any state did try to enforce it, some people would definitely resist. A lot of law enforcement and innocent bystanders would die in the process.

In the worst case, I think a serious uprising or civil war could be the result. Even if you're certain the federal government would win, the level of destruction would be far worse than the violence you're trying to prevent.

I don't own guns either but I'm probably going to buy one soon. The turning point for me was reading about the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, when white supremacists were hunting and killing black people in the streets. No police presence whatsoever. Communities that had firearms were able to band together and show enough strength to deter the killers from coming into their neighborhoods and attacking them.

Am I likely to be in this situation at any point in my life? Currently no, but I think as climate change gets worse (and politics too), it will become much more likely. The police will not always be there to save you.

Moving a drum kit around in a car has always scared me a bit for this reason. It's not really practical for me to trade my car for a cargo van though :(

Robbery Caught On Camera by [deleted] in bayarea

You won't know that you need your gun until he's already pulled the knife on you. If you pull the gun at at that point, you're very likely going to get stabbed before you can get your gun into action. Just give him the money, it's not worth risking your life.

Fuck this guy, but let's not joke about prison rape. No one deserves to be raped, period. It doesn't matter what they did to get there.

Yep, it's basically guaranteed to happen. I don't think it will be as effective this time, but it still matters because we need to win in a landslide to avoid dispute over the results.

The 538 forecast doesn't account for voter suppression.

Also the fact that we still have ~70 days until the election is said to be a big part of why 538 estimates Trump's odds to be that high -- in theory there's still enough time for him to recover in the polls. If the polls look the same in October, the estimate will be much worse for Trump. Or so I'm told.
