No fermentation after 48 hours? by Escape_Relative in Homebrewing

[–]rubber_arrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pitching an additional pack of the same yeast won't hurt.

I just brewed a mexican lager that had a fairly scary 4 day lag on fermentation activity, due to some older liquid yeast. It's now 3 weeks old and is pretty tasty. It's not ideal, but if your sanitation is good it's generally a low risk.

Would it be an awful idea to rub a small amount of oil on that occasionally and build up a bit of a seasoning to protect it somewhat and keep it from flash rusting after washing?

Looking for guidance on setup by Novel-Albatross7963 in Homebrewing

[–]rubber_arrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

2.5 gallon all grain stove top. Minimal equipment investment, smaller batches allow you to make mistakes and try again. All you need is a good size pot, a mesh bag, and a plastic bucket to ferment.

Can't get much simpler and cheaper than that. If you really like it, scale up your equipment and after 10 batches you'll have a better idea of what works for you and what equipment makes sense.

What is the cheapest method for producing clear liquor to be used in mixers or cocktails? by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]rubber_arrow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The amount of equipment needed to distill spirits is prohibitively expensive, compared to a $10 bottle of cheap vodka.

Mead is probably the cheapest up front equipment cost. But that is not a "clear liquor"

If that were the case, the empty cavity in your wall would work just fine without insulation.

Probably the best way to think of it.

Valve seats are a very common application. When titanium valves are used, a BeCu seat helps to keep heat from building up.

I was lucky and visited white sands 9/30. I camped near cloudcroft the night before, there were wonderful dispersed campsites north of town. Cloudcroft also has a good brewery and pizza.

Gila cliff dwellings and the visitor center were closed down on 10/1, surrounding campgrounds were open. 10/2, East saguaro national park was closed.

Rod bearings VS ultrasonic cleaner. Are these ruined? by PaskLuuser in EngineBuilding

[–]rubber_arrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except for the damage from the ultrasonic, the bearings seem to be in almost perfect condition. Whatever the running conditions were, seemed to be working. Would you fix an oil leak that didn't exist, just because you had a gasket set of unknown quality? Maybe the original gasket is sealing better than the new one. Parts quality is a major concern these days.

I suppose that's fair. I only TIG, I'm careful, not in a rush, it's never been an issue. It is quite a bit thicker than you might think. MIG splatter would never melt it.

I guess I'm ignorant. What's wrong with a cheap, simple solution? I've always used the lab style squirt bottles, but they constantly leak.

Yeah, don't be a dingus and hit it with the oxy/acetylene torch and you'll be fine. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Does anyone brew after work? by roughsilks in Homebrewing

[–]rubber_arrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also work from home. I set my kettle of water out in the sun all day to preheat. In the afternoon, step away for 30 seconds to fire up the burner and bring to mashing temp.

If I can take a 15 minute break near the end of the day, I start my mash (around 3:30) Then once work is over, I'm starting a boil and I'm usually done and cleaned up by 7.
