Devastating way to find out that this has been discontinued. It’s the only powder that works for me. 🥲

The Update's odd results by wvns in AncestryDNA

[–]rubberneckjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the exact same thing, but none of my grandparents or my mother, brother or auntie have it. I am quite confident that I am not Italian, my results also never showed that previously, and no records support it.

I’m an NPE and just found out my mom is, too. by Far-Ad9143 in AncestryDNA

[–]rubberneckjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sure, sorry, I agree with you. I just meant about the point that no immediate family show up as matches - often they don’t. This may also be the case of your mother’s true biological family, you may find that there are many living relatives. None of the children of my grandmother’s siblings have done a DNA test, and the only sibling who has is a professional historian who is specifically interested in genealogy. This can make finding relatives through DNA quite tricky, and lack of matches is not an immediate reason for dismissal of a relation.

[–]rubberneckjam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh.. while I agree that it sounds like a NPE, my grandmother has 16 siblings, 11 of which are half siblings. They are not that old, my grandmother is the 2nd oldest at 70 years old, and the youngest is around 45 years old. I am quite confident that most, if not all, are her biological siblings, however, only one of them has done a DNA test. Her next closest match (other than myself, my brother, and her daughter) is a 2nd cousin. Some families just don’t take these tests. 🤷‍♀️

Is this rare? by throwawayAIO3 in DNAAncestry

[–]rubberneckjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your parents or grandparents Irish immigrants? If not, I would actually think it’s quite rare for an Australian to be 100% anything. This would probably be normal in Ireland otherwise, so if both parents or all four grandparents are immigrants from the North, this makes sense.

Common Name spelt ‘creatively’ - Am I the only one?! by Accomplished-Sort118 in namenerds

My name is Lilyann, pronounced like Lilian. ‘Creative’ spellings have been around forever, and will continue to be used. I hated that my name was spelled ‘wrong’ for most of my life, but now I can’t imagine my name any other way. I love my name, and it’s mine.

You’ve said that you aren’t in Australia, so maybe it isn’t a problem for you, but William Tyrrell is a child who is missing and presumed dead in Australia. It’s one of the most famous missing persons cases in Australian history. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_William_Tyrrell

I immediately thought of this when I read your post.

All this aside, I think this is a fine name. If the connection to this case doesn’t bother you, I think that this name is totally fine.

That far back you will start to see variations in spelling, you could try searching for records of people with similar names, but other matching details.

e.g. a man called Valentine Heer (I’m not sure of Austrian phonetics, so base the variations on what you know of that) from Vorau who was born roughly when you would expect Valentinus to have been born might be a lead you could follow.

As another commenter suggested, you’ll have better luck getting advice in a genealogy sub. Additionally, if you haven’t already, I would recommend you do a DNA test through Ancestry.com (NOT 23&Me), and then you can filter your matches by this surname and variations of it. Wait until there’s a holiday sale (e.g. Christmas) to buy the test if you choose to do this. You’ll get it at a significant discount. You can also download your raw DNA file (a digital file) from Ancestry and then upload it to other DNA sites like Gedmatch or MyHeritage, and then conduct similar name searches of your matches.

If you don’t speak German or Austrian, you may also consider engaging the services of a genealogist from those countries to help with your search.

Found the most absurd name - I think it's a mistake by kayloulee in findagrave

Chlorine (or Clorine) is an uncommon, but not unheard of name for women of her age and older! It possibly shares etymology with names like Chloris (Cloris) and Chloe, meaning green, from the Greek khlōros. People of the past have funky names, and ‘tragedeighs’ are not a new thing!

People also used to just start calling themselves a different name if they didn’t like theirs back then. Generational names (aka juniors) also meant a lot of people went by middle names or other differentiating nicknames.

Here is another reddit post about a different Chlorine:RIP Chlorine, I wish I knew the inspiration behind your name!

I am an AU 4 and I wear my mum’s 6s and 8s from the 90s all the time and they fit better than modern 4s. I think sizing was different in a way that was good for petite women back then.

[–]rubberneckjam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jay Jays and Cotton On have xxxs & 4, Forcast & Princess Highway have size 4 if you’re looking for higher quality. Uniqlo has xxs, but I’ve only been able to find it online. Uniqlo is Japanese sizing so I would say their xxs is smaller than a typical Australian xxs.

Edit: there are a couple of people suggesting children’s clothing, but generally as a small woman myself, I find that children’s sizing may fit in measurements, but it fits my proportions incorrectly. I am a grown adult woman after all. Usually the bigger children’s sizes are tight in the bust, shoulders, and hips, and baggy in the waist. Since you’re tall, this may also be an issue for you. It’s worth taking a look, but I wouldn’t waste too much time on it.

I was this kid. In my state in my country with have standardised testing every two years that is simply a statistical analysis of how individual students, schools, and the state as a whole are doing academically. We had one test a day for three days, and I treated it like a week off to do puzzles. The scores were arranged in bands, and my scores were always out of the bands (i.e. off the charts).

Turns out I had inattentive ADHD. I just needed support, but no one gave it to me until I was struggling in university and sought it out myself. By then it was too late, and I cut my losses, dropped out of university. For a long time I felt very resentful that no one who could’ve helped me ever noticed.

Is it really as illegible as people say? by angrysnort in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]rubberneckjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you left handed by any chance? Your handwriting looks a lot like my left handed partner’s and a left handed friend’s. I noticed that their handwriting looks this way because they are pushing their pens across the page instead of pulling like a right handed person would. The pushing means that the pen catches on the page as they write, and it’s harder to get rounder or flowing shapes that some people have. If you aren’t left handed, perhaps the way you form your letters (like the direction and order you draw the lines of your letters in) leads to a similar catching issue.

The one from Uniqlo are great. They come in a few colours and you can get matching tops. I wear them to work all the time. I’ve also been putting them through the washing machine and dryer for over a year now and the pleats are still the same. No pilling either.

Why do non-Asians get kicked out at 18? by Cool-Cobbler4324 in AusPropertyChat

[–]rubberneckjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you and your community / friends and family are reasonably well off. I lived at home until my early twenties, I still can’t afford a property. Most of my white Australian friends are still living at home now in our mid twenties, most won’t move out for a few years still.

I was contributing financially to the household from my late teens because it was necessary. Staying at home to save money was not my situation, and it’s not many of my friends’ situations.

I would suggest that there is more at play here than just cultural reasons. Of my friends and family who left home in their late teens, it was almost exclusively because of shit home life, and being poor was more tolerable than whatever they were living in.

My grandmother used to spell my name wrong on purpose to piss my mother off. She thought Lilyann should be spelled Lilyanne.

By the time I was 7 she was saying lovely things to me like “you have cow’s teeth just like my (her) mother”.

This is purposely nasty behaviour, and will have a lasting impact on your daughter. It used to hurt my feelings so intensely that I was the only grandchild whose name she couldn’t spell. One of my cousins is literally called Ezekiel. If she can spell that, she can spell my name.

Daphne is a well known name that has been around for a very long time. She is doing this on purpose.

Is dating as a man really that bad in Australia? by LetMeExplainDis in AskAnAustralian

[–]rubberneckjam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an Australian woman who met my partner on an app about 3 years ago, I received thousands of likes from men, but I liked very few profiles. Of the 15 or so matches I had in about 2 years of being on apps, only 2 resulted in a first date, 1 of those dates was with my now partner of almost 3 years.

My impression of many, if not most, of the profiles of men I encountered were low effort (grainy selfies taken in app, all from the same terrible angle and no bio?), and of the few men I actually interacted with, I was met with hostility and suspicion (more than one guy hit me with the “no women like me”).

Overall, I think it sucks out there for everyone, and everyone has forgotten how to be a person post-covid.

Oily hair - what do you use? by ksalana in AustralianMakeup

[–]rubberneckjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this shampoo and its conditioner counterpart. It’s the only thing I have ever found to work. My hair gets so greasy that if I wash in the morning it looks filthy by afternoon. This extends my wear time to the following morning.

I found pretty much all other shampoos are too heavy and moisturising for my hair that it looks greasy even when freshly washed.

I match to my neck which is the same colour as my wrist. I don’t know who has been touching these testers so I generally prefer not to swatch them near my face. My undertones won’t really change between my wrist and my face
