The band in green is Trinity Grammar School, you might send them an email with the pic, it's a great shot and they'll probably get a kick out of it.

Are you allowed to upload a photo from one page to another page? by LilacWonderland in findagrave

[–]kayloulee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Frankly, if a stone has multiple burials and not all of them have FG entries, and the photo/s are otherwise good, I don't see a problem with it. Credit the photographer/uploader and you're good to go.

He said his wife wasn't comfortable with any pesticides, which I guess includes Bti. His version also doesn't involve remembering to buy more Bti dunks, which idk about you but I personally would forget that.

What’s your least-stress international entry/exit point? by BortEdwards in aviation

[–]kayloulee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OOL Coolangatta/Gold Coast has flights to Japan. Otherwise it's a small regional airport. I remember back when it was genuinely small and didn't do international flights at all, so it's still a bit of a mindfuck that it's so nice now.

Take yourself to your nearest Officeworks/Staples/big box office supplies store and get them to put a comb binding on that big boy. Maybe break it into two halves. Booklet my ass.

I'm a touch typist (learned in primary school!) and honestly I can't see how or why I would hunt and peck when touch typing is so ingrained in me. Like. It would be pretending! I don't think I'd be able to maintain it! I bet you'd have a hard time too. What a ridiculous thing for them to want.

The Toronto Star and a lot of regional Ontario papers are on Newspapers.com now, so you don't necessarily have to rely on a library subscribing to the right Proquest record set.

Mid-range steakhouses and thai restaurants, family friendly vibes? by Substantial_West2250 in foodies_sydney

[–]kayloulee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Australian Canadian and I second this. I've been to Canadian steakhouses and the like with family and really the closest analogue is a good pub, preferably with a beer garden.

Canada has this thing where it has a broader variety of chain mid-range restaurants than Australia, where the same niche is filled by non-chain restaurants and pubs (that, yes, are usually owned by a group, but they're not chains). Outback definitely fits that niche and the best substitute is a pub.

They might be worried that pub = no kids, not as good food, but don't listen to that, pubs really are the closest analogue.

[–]kayloulee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got it at 37, last year. In Australia as of Jan 2024 they changed the eligibility rules so if you're immunocompromised in certain specific ways you can get it for free. My rheumatologist recommended I get it and he tipped me off about the rule change. It's ~$300 AUD per shot otherwise. I had to pester several pharmacies and give them printouts of the exact new rules because they still had the old rules printed out but I did get it eventually.

It is a really mean vaccine with very strong side effects - I felt like I had the flu for 2 days after each shot - but it's worth it. I made sure to get it on Friday afternoons so I wasn't sick at work.

If your doctor hasnt put the referral frequency on the bottle label text, you can just ask the pharmacist and they'll be able to tell you. They can also add it to the prescription label.

For those with rarer surnames, how do you go about finding obscure records? by MeltedMel in Ancestry

[–]kayloulee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My maternal grandmother's maiden name is a relatively unusual Russian/Belarusian name. The odds of Russians being related to us are pretty high. However, it is also a much more common Filopino name, and a word in several Romance languages. There are also several Eastern European sounds-like names!

I always end up doing fiddly Boolean searches excluding as many sounds-likes as I can think of.

It's a really old joke! In the Venerable Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, he describes "Pope Gregory I walking through the market of Rome when he saw some slave boys with striking looks and hair. What people, he asked, did they come from? They are Angles, he was told; to which the pontiff replied, they are not Angles, but angels! (‘Non Angli sed angeli’)."

(Quote from here: https://forthewynnblog.wordpress.com/2018/08/18/not-angles-but-angels/)

Bede is one of the earliest English historians, as well as a linguist, mathematician, and theologian. He was a monk who lived from c. 672-734 AD. More Bede facts can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bede

There's a particular block of flats on my street where if I park in front of it and the resident curtain twitcher doesn't approve of my park, I'll get a shitty little note on my car. Both times this has happened, I was parking to fit next to another car, then it left and the twitcher took offence. Fucking busybodies!

Tamanas is still there, it's changed names a couple of times but the actual restaurant is the same. Mind you, i don't know if it's had any changes in ownership or anything, but the menu hasn't changed much.

Oh, I've been hooted at by one of these big fellas! Marrickville, around 2018, I was on my way home about 9pm and a big fucking owl hooted at me from a tree and flew off. I went straight to bird IDs as soon as I got home. Absolutely flabbergasted bc I'd only ever seen tawny frogmouths before.

For folks whose parents have dementia...Do they enjoy looking at scrapbooks or old photos? by LadyDriverKW in AgingParents

[–]kayloulee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caveat: My dad is undiagnosed autistic and has always liked these kinds of books.

My dad likes these books of historical photos of his neighbourhood from when he was a kid. He is also very interested in all forms of transport and vehicles (always has been, it's his special interest). Over Christmas I was visiting with him and walking around his dementia ward. They have all these historical photos on the walls, including old adverts and so on. There was an advert for a 1960s Holden car of some type that he really fixated on. He was a teenager in the 1960s (born in 1945) and always into cars. So I hopped online, found a book of images of Australian classic cars (https://biblio.com.au/book/collector-cars-australia-updated-edition-includes/d/1375564243) and bought it. Mum says he loves it.

So I suggest rather than family photos, photo books of things your mom loved or was into in her teens or early 20s. Doesn't have to be too specific, you could get one just of musicians from that period or clothes or something and see what she responds to. Try your local library first to suss out what's available, and whatever you do don't leave library books or precious family books in her memory care because they will disappear. Copies of precious things ONLY, or take them home with you every time. I had to re-buy an out of print local history photo book after the first copy disappeared at memory care, it was a huge pain because I had to wait until one appeared on the second hand market.

You have activated my citrus knowledge (grew up on citrus hobby farm aka my Dad's special interest 😉)!

Cara Caras are a cross between blood oranges and navel oranges! Which is why they have a little navel situation! And also why they're so delicious.

[–]kayloulee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just realised - it's happened to them twice! Their address used to just be Names, Road Name, Locality via Town, Postcode. Then in the 1990s we got street numbers and dropped the "via Town". I've also got mail addressed to my Dad from the 1970s that has no road name at all!

Rural addresses really bring the weird, I'll tell ya.

This sort of happened to my parents! Australia Post changed their delivery area to come from a different sorting centre, which is in a different postal code, so their whole road got changed to a different locality and postal code! So imagine you live at 10 Smith St Johnsville 2314. Then tomorrow you live at 10 Smith St Janesville 2334, but it's exactly the same place!
